Idle screw

Post by datsun4eva »

Hello everyone, relatively new owner of a Yellow 72 Coupe since last year. Im pulling apart and cleaning the carb after it started stalling at stops and have been reading up on why that could be the case. One subject that I would like to have clarify is if the idle mixture screw is supposed to be the way the that it looks like in the photos (flat), or pointy? Thank you.

The flat tipped screw is the throttle stop screw. It is used to set the idle speed. The pointed screw is used to set the idle mixture. Check fuel cut off solenoid... the round thing on the side of the carb with the wire hanging out. Check it by having someone turn the ignition key on and off while listening for a click. No click, it is bad and the engine will die when you come to a stop. Check for a corroded connection.

What I eventually found to be the cause was worn seals on the throttle shaft allowing air to leak in and make the fuel mixture too lean to maintain idle.  They can be removed and replaced with 5/16"x1/2" seals which are easily obtained from a bearing supplier .  The originals are 8x13mm so the replacements need to glued in place with a dab in silicone sealant, well that's what I used 5 years ago and still all good.

just to add  silicone  and gas don't mix the silicone  turns  to mush  so if your going to use a  sealer  go find gasket sench  its the only stuff  that gas will not  bother  but use it lightly  and clean your hands  off right away  don't come off easy after its dry   now my spelling may be off  on the sealer  but any auto parts  store will have it  this is used  on  carbs for cars and boats
