Shroud bolts
So does anyone have a theory about WHY the shroud bolts are so prone to breaking AND a method for making it less likely to happen? (just got through fixing 2 broken shroud bolts)
Here are my guesses as to possible causes and solutions:
a) bolt overtightened solution: torque properly
b) bolt too loose solution: torque properly
c) factory bolts too hard/brittle
solution: replace factory bolts with softer bolts more prone to bend rather than break.
Does anyone know what the real cause is?
Is there another cause I haven't considered?

Re: Shroud bolts
Replace your rubber bushings with urethane ones.

Re: Shroud bolts
When I was rebuilding my car I was told that the reason they break is due to the steel bolts being threaded into an Alluminum block would cause the two metals to attack each other and the bolts would become brittle. Thats why all the factory bolts are coated. The coating keeps the 2 metals from working against each other.

Re: Shroud bolts
You guys talking about Side Shrouds? Never seen one break.
Fan Shrouds? Constant force on 6mm bolts that should have been 8's and most people have never
seen the inner washers that go under the bushings so the steel bushing doesn't dig into the head &
cylinder material. The inner washers are a different shape and fall off when installing the fan assy
but I add a dab of silicone seal and they stay in place. Photo shows 8 of same washer.

Miles,
Sorry, yes. My question was about the fan shroud bolts, not the side shrouds.
And I was mainly wondering what steps the seasoned Honda 600 veterans take (if anything) to keep the bolts from breaking again in the future.

If all of the parts are present and assembled correctly and the rubber cushions are in good condition the bolts wont't break. Make sure the bolts are not stretched or are showing signs of stress.Observe the correct torque is used during assembly.I have been driving my 600 for the last 30 years with no broken shroud bolts.

Re: [2cylinderhondas] Re: Shroud bolts
In the good old days, we sold a set of cushions every time some one rebuilt an engine. If they hadnt shrunk from the heat, they might have been turned into gummy licorice drops by oil contamination. Sold lots of cushions and seats, but dont remember selling the inner collar. In any event, once the rubbers lose their effectiveness from heat or oil, the fan belt and blade can move the housing around enough to eventually break the bolts&.. ouch. Yes, there is a problem with electrolysis between the bolts and cylinder barrel. Soak with penetrating oil let it sit for a day, re-soak and give it a try&.. but be carefull as the mounting bosses on the cyl assy have been known to strip or break off&.. double ouch! The good news, at this point, once corrected, the bolts should now last forever, as you will be driving it very little and be watching it like a hawk.

Re: Shroud bolts
If you look at the attached scan of a parts manual note that each rubber cushion has a metal sleeve in it's center which rests against the cam box and because this is of an earlier version there is no bolt at the bottom. But the connecting bolt includes the washer rubber cushion with the sleeve making it able to achieve the torque needed to hold every thing in place. The other page shows the same cushion-washer-bolt configuration and the sleeve is still needed just not shown. The sleeve allows the required torque and by adding a drop of loctite on the threads will ensure the bolt stays in place.
