Re: Charging
I would bet you need a good contact cleaner. I have never seen a 600 harness that's contacts weren't totally corroded. I use Limeaway a bathroom product and a good rinse because it works and is not 3 times the price it should be. Then do what Mark said. Or you can cheat like I did and put a 55amp tiny GM alternator on it.

Re: Charging
Dwb do you have pictures of your alternator install that you did? Would love to see how you did it and how you connected it electrically. I was thinking about doing an alternator in my 70.

I can supply you more details if you need them. The Alt is from a Geo Metro. The mount is aluminum plate bolted to a piece of steel angle welded to the front motor brace. The fan is from an atv and the shielding is hand fabricated. Wiring is simple. One fat wire #6 to battery and one to ign. Oh and you can run an alternator backwards. Because the regulator is internal all that stuff is gone.
I would not give up on your oem setup. You more than likely have the wires to the diodes backwards. Nothing happens when you do that. Diodes only work one way. If there was no smoke than there is no damage done. To bad your not in Socal, we could fix it in a few minutes.

Re: Charging
Ok. I did see your post on JNC a while back . I am planning on keeping the stock setup if I possibly can, the alternator idea is kinda last resort. I don't think there is any damage except to the brushes possbly so I will check it this weekend. I like what you dI'd with your trunk lid if I can find a decent donor. I don't want to cut up my stock one. I had my car stock for a year and am now making it a bit racier I guess you could say. I put 12 7" rims and tires on it and a center mounted exhaust with a custom muffler from Gibson on it. Everything I have done can easily be put back to stock if the need or desire arrises. Now that my fan doesn't rattle any more it sounds really good. I live in the inland empire so I'm not too far from Monrovia.

Re: Charging
Mine is charging but not with the lights on. The alt. that you mounted
looks like no room for the battery what did you do with it?

Mark;
Check the ground wire to the voltage regulator. You said your wires had melted insulation, the black wire to the voltage regulator often heats up and shorts to another wire or melts the wire to the point there is no connection. Pull the regulator off the car and look at the bottom of it and the plastic connector.
