easier steering repair

I think that it may be possible to replace the bad steering rack bushings on my Honda coupe without removing the steering rack. How does this sound :
Remove the steering shaft down to and including the u-joint. Then , from under the hood, remove the pinion shaft lock nut, the adjusting bolt,and the c-clip/washer.
Then pull the pinion shaft out from inside the car, remove the old lower bushing from under the hood and the old top bushing from inside the car. Reassemble using new bushings.
OR leave the pinion shaft in place and pull the bad bushings out around the shaft. Reassemble using new bushings.
Does this sound like a possibility ? ....or at least worth a try ?

You may be able to remove some of the components, but the bar in the rack needs to be removed to remove the pinion.  The housing will require a complete cleaning and that can't be done without removing the rack.

It's true, you can't just pull out the pinion but if you are really lazy you might be able to snare the bushings out without even removing the pinion. The top bushing has a metal retainer.
It's really not that hard to get the complete rack assy out.

Related to this, Bill what is the most up to date repair procedure for the rack? Can't remember if someone is making bushings for sale now..... I remember your original write up on this
