I believe I removed radio first and from there, reach into speedo cable and removed cable. Then pulled out and unplugged rest.

The speedometer has 3 spring clips which are holding it in the instrument cluster.  You need to grab the outside of the speedometer housing and work it out by wiggling it.  If your speedo cable is long enough,  you can disconnect it after you pull out the speedometer.  If not,  you will need to reach under the dash to disconnect it or reach through the slot where the radio is located (as someone else has suggested).
If you are having problems pulling out the speedo,  then push it out from behind.   There will also be an electrical connection going to the speedo for the light.  You can disconnect the 2 push-on connectors or remove the connector at the bulb.
good luck,

Also the springs may be rusty and that can make it hard to slide out.

Disconnect the speedo cable at the trans. That will give the slack needed
for the cable. then remove the speedo gauge by working it out of the
mounting hole in the dash. hope this helps.

Quick & Easy - use a sharpened screwdriver and pry it between the gauge and the dash. Put a paint stick or piece of leather etc under blade of screwdriver and pry out the gauge. Unscrew cable & twist remove light bulb socket.
