Hi Guys,
Does anyone know what the Exact differences are between US version vs the Hawaiian version regarding the Honda 1972 Coupe engine?
I know the carb & exhaust are different but how? I want to shoot for the 45hp engine..
Thanks,
Elliot

The "Hawaiian" car was originally intended as the first Honda car for the entire market.  However, there were two small problems.  The "drum" style heater just did not put out enough heat to defrost the windshield or heat the cabin on a cold winter morning.  The second problem was 45hp was too much for the primary drive system's long term survivabilty.  These were not problems on the tropical islands with a 45mph speed limit.  Hawiian spec cars were sent to the west coast.  They sat in  L.A., Portland, and San Francisco ports until Honda wrote them off.
The diference between mainland and Hawiian engines are: Big carb, manifold and boot.  Head and cam box with a larger intake tract.  The head also featured exhaust ports that pointed off to opposite sides rather than straight ahead.  There is no heat exchanger.  The exhaust pipes meet in a "Y" pipe below and behind the engine.  Oh, let's not forget the high lift, long duration camshaft.  The exhaust pipes fit a sedan but as I recall, there is less room in the Z.
Is it worth the effort?  Yes and maybe not.  The car is "quicker" but there is no heater and bolting it all up to a less than fresh crankshaft or rock hard 35-40 year old primary drive dampers might lead to serious "non" fun.  Actually, quicker is a relative term.  In this case, quicker than a mainland 600.
Best Wishes, Don Laughton
