Hi jpro, it 's funny talking about getting 45HP!
Stock Opel's only put out 75-90HP and they weigh 2,080lb's.
But, everything needs to be improved!
I will take a look at the photo's. Always looking for new ways to do something.
Not sure what the weak part is on this motor/transaxle setup.
I don't want to push it. My Orange coupe will be a mostly stock car.
The Opel folks are into HP also. Most have switched from the Solex carb to a 32-26 Weber which is adaptable to just about anything with the right jets and emulsion tubes.
I think the stock carb, with very minor jet changes would easily handle the increased air flow of a 45-50HP engine. Unless bores are bigger or the useful RPM's go way up?
I was told to look at an engine as an air pump. A 600cc pump moves X amount of air at an RPM. If the Bore or RPM doesn't go up, neither does the air being moved. If you can add the right amount of fuel to that air you have more power.
Everything must be matched!
Putting twin webers and a 2" exhaust would do nothing for this engine..... would look cool though.
Will start thinking about a header design for this motor.
I know others used to sell them, saw an artical in a peterson's book years ago.

When you mention "air pump" it remonds me of a friend of mine who told me about taking smog pumps, aka AIR pumps, from early 70's American cars and rigging them up, back in the day, to be low-pressure superchargers for Honda 600's - now that would move some air for power!

All,
I have been listening to the electric fan workup, and looking at the design there is a very good reason for the fan and housing put in the way they are.  Put the bolts in (and the washers and center pipe along with good cushions) using the correct amount of torque and locktight for the threads, and the engine will be cool.  The part that is missed is the oil.  While the fins on the cylinders cool down the engine, the transmission will and does bake the oil.   So, better filter, better oil cooling, and add about a quart in the deal and you will have an engine that will run smooth for a very long time.
Even if you add an electric fan, you have to jury-rig the thing in place.  Using the old fan housing is the best bet, but here again,  the blades of the fan have to line up with the housing and bent in the right direction to administer good flow.  If you leave the shrouds off then you are loosing CFM around the cylinder fins and cooling.
 Just because a radiator fan looks like it will do the trick it is made for a different purpose.  If you look at the makeup of a radiator and the layout of a Honda 600 motor, there are huge differences.  Where the Honda fan pulls air across the fins more than 8 inches to the front of the engine, the radiator fan is mounted on the radiator.
If you really want to find out if it works, have a machine shop make a oil drain plug bolt with a center drilled to fit a sender and mount a temp gauge under the dash and watch your engine oil temp clime.  Even with a electric fan sucking air over the cylinder fins, all the oil travels through the engine once every minute at idle.  It does not cool enough and your temp gauge.  Attach a cylinder head temp sender under one of the spark plugs and find out what the temp is on the head.  The cylinder head will sit at around 350 Degrees.  The oil temp will run into the 235 to 250 area.  Every engine you open up will be dark brown to black from oil turning into tar.  Hook an oil cooler and remote filter up to it, leave the original fan in place and the gauges and watch the change.

Hi Bill, good points, you have been working on these issues awhile.
With the electric fan, I was only thinking of HP loss driving the idler pulleys,
bearing loss, belt tension....
I was going to keep the fan shroud as is, as you say that is the key to getting
air flow past the fins. I wanted to use a 8" electric fan in place of the belt
driven one.
I agree the oil cooler is the best idea for engine cooling and longer life!
Living in Florida that is something I will add for sure.
I also like the temp gage under the spark plug, I could use the one off my
racing Go-Kart.

Yeah. Good question. I wonder if the engine was originally designed for 45hp and they under-powered it for the continental US? Is that possible?

Just a thought but would not all this extra power put more pressure on the crank ( a part that is VERY hard to come by) unless some one has come up with a crank shaft that will work.  Seems like this may end the life of your car.  like I said 'just a thought'

Your probably right, 1972 was a bad time for cars. Emission controls just started showing up on vehicals. Retarded spark, lean carbs, air pumps......really affected the performance of the small cars.
I am just getting involved with the Honda, so their is a lot to learn about what Honda did about tuning.
The timing advance curve is another area that will hurt performance. We all know in the early years the Honda cars were all about miles per gallon. So getting a little better HP by matching the timing, air/fuel mixture and exhaust flow should be just a little fine tuning. I would give up a couple MPG to get a little more power and drivability.
But not at the expense of engine life, parts are too hard to find.

Hi,
When I bought my LN 360 the belt drive for the fan was missing, and the shrouds were missing. The PO had put an electric radiator fan on driver side of the motor. Obviously the opposite cylinder was not getting air flow.
With no local source of parts (this is in Costa Rica) we got a biscuit fan motor, adapted it to the original plastic fan blade, and with the help of a machinist placed it inside the original fan housing. Now the fan pulls more or less like the original, but at a steady RPM. We will install guages, great advice Bill.
But, we still have no cylinder shrouds. Anybody have shrouds for sale for a 360?

There was a Honda Dealership in Panama City, Panama that was well stocked with new parts.  if you can track them down they may be able to point you to a parts source for your 360.  Panama had a lot of them at one time.

Hi Steven;
I looked up the Shroud Assemblies just to see if there was any chance of them being the same as the ones on a Honda 600.  Well, no chance.  I do have the part number for you.  Right is 19650-605-812 and Left is 19660-605-304.  However, the pulley assembly (the two pulley's on a bracket bolted to the fan) are the same as a Honda 600 unit.  And, I am sure there are plenty of Honda 600 owners in the group that can provide them for you.
