Wheels with more space for big brakes?

Post by MarkN »

One of the projects that my poor little Honda Sedan is undergoing this
winter is the upgrading of the brakes.
I've got a set of KAD 6 piston 1 piece aluminum calipers, some bigger
rotors for Austin Mini Coopers, and some other Gucci brake stuff.
The problem is that the new calipers are too big to fit in my "street"
wheels. My "race" wheels are very square on the inside; the mounting
surface of the wheel goes straight out to the rim. On my "street"
wheels, there is a big dip on the rim to make it easier to mount
tires. Unfortunately, the inside of this dip is in the way of the
calipers.
Has anybody noticed that certain wheels have more room for brakes than
others? I'm willing to trade my wheels, lugnuts and tires (all nice
and shiny, the Yokohama A008s have 1/4" of tread left) for your old
dingy wheels if they've got more room inside.
If all else fails, I'll go buy another set of my "race" rims, but they
don't look as cool as a set of mags.
Cheers, Miles E.

My 13" RX7 wheels have tons of extra room for oversize calipers.

Dave- Huh. I had forgotten about the bigger wheel option... I like the small 10" wheels for autocross, but I could see getting bigger wheels for street use. Thanks. BTW, I think your coupe looks great with the RX7 wheels.

Miles,
Have you looked into ATV wheels?
Yamahas and Suzukis(?) use 4x110 bolt pattern and have some DEEP rear wheels in 10" or 12" sizes.
Even some of the front wheels may be enough to get you the clearance you need.
You can find steelies for pretty cheap.
Alloys may be a bit more but they're out there too.
Check swap meets and local dirtbike shops. they may even allow you to test fit a used one to see how well it works.
something like this:

(these are 12 x 6)
Don't know if they're DOT approved, but doubt they'd fail on the street (less punishment than ATV use) and doubt any highway patrol is going to inspect a 10" wheel for a DOT stamp.
Thumbs up for being resourceful!
I wanna see pics of the brake setup once you get it all sorted.
peas.

Dave. What size tires are you running on these rims?  With your tires, what is the height difference (if any) from the orginal 10" rims?
