slapping sound?

Could it possibly be fuel related??  I had some one help me this morning and had to choke it to get it started and to keep it running.  Heard the slap a couple times starting up but then sounded ok after it got to actually running.
Maybe with a good solenoid it wont have to run on choke.  Also plan on changing fuel filter.  I couldn't see but assume it is down near the fuel pump.  Do you need to remove heater fan to get to it???

Do you have a coupe or a sedan?   It sounds like your fuel solenoid is ok ..... if it were not working,  the engine would not run for more than a few seconds.   Disconnect the fuel inlet hose at the carb,  place the hose into a container,  turn the ignition switch to the IGN position and you should hear the fuel pump clicking and the container will start filling with fuel.  After a few seconds,  you should have at least an ounce of fuel in the container.  If you do,  the pump and filter seem ok.  Check the quality of the fuel which has been pumped.
If you have to keep it choked to keep it running you could have several problems including;
1)  carb problem
2)  bad seal at the inlet manifold (where carb connects to engine)
3)  ignition timing off
4)  dirty points
5)  dirty air cleaner
6)  poor compression
7)  dirty spark plugs
8)  defective spark plug wire
What is the story on the engine?  Has it been sitting for a long period of time and you are trying to get it running?  Do you know when it last ran?
When I have had problems like you are seeing,  I have done the following;
1)  remove air filter
2)  use 2 new plugs and check the spark
3)  use a container of gas connected to carb using my an extra fuel pump (this is so I know fresh gas is being pumped into the car)
4)   check the engine compression
5)   check static timing of engine
6)   check valve clearances
7) check oil level ok
8)  when I turn on the engine, I should hear the solenoid click, the fuel pump should make its clicking noise until carb is full and then the clicking should stop.  If fuel pump keep clicking,  you may have a problem with the carb's needle and seat.
If everything seems good and still having problems,  I check the seal of the carb at the inlet (usually you can just tighten the screw).  If problems still exist,  I take the carb off the engine, remove bowl, and inspect/clean and adjust float level and verify the needle/seat is working properly.

Thanks for the info.  Will check them out at the easiest ones first.  Time flies but it has probably been 5 yrs since I pulled it in the shop and parked it.  Had too many projects going at the time.  It ran good then except at idle.  I put a tooth pick in by needle of solenoid and finally got it adjusted right to get a fairly good idle after it got warm.
    I did clean plugs as best as i could and put new gas in a dry tank. but that don't say what condition tank was in.  Fuel pump does pump up and stop.
    Hey Guys I still need a carb solenoid and a good horn too.  Have got to have horn for inspection.   Oh, I did give air filter a good ?? cleaning.  Napa don't have them.   Now I need cooler and less humid weather as my shop no longer has electric after lungs went to pot.

I've done the toothpick trick with the solenoid....works great.
Sounds like you do need a solenoid and it sounds like the carb was in good condition but needs to be cleaned.  Have you considered disassembling the carb and then soaking it carb cleaner?
If you do get another carb,  get the later model version and not the one with the diaphragm.  The USA coupes always had the later model carbs as original equipment.

I just picked the toothpick thing out of the air as I had no info about the Honda then.  Now with all you guys answering questions and knowing and in some cases having parts is great.  Just wish my mind and body was in pre COPD
condition.  Speaking of that I wear liquid oxygen all the time.  I know that and
petro products are supposed to be hazardous.  My Question, what is the danger
and what could happen with oil or brake fluid gets on the unit and face.
 Have had it happen without it being a disaster.  I digress.
   Have thought about cleaning the carb but that's another "  round to it "
