Doing more research on how this engine operates and it is just
confusing me more, hopefully someone can clear me up.
Is the engine 4 or 2 stroke? seems to operate like a 2 stroke
would it be considered more like a single cylinder engine since both
cylinders are firing at the same time?
Is the engine firing in both intake and exaust cycle? if both could i
just get away firing once?

It is 4 stroke (intake, compression, power, exhaust)

no, it is 2 cylinders but Honda wanted to save some money and did not install a distributor. The spark plugs are ignited at the end of the compression stroke and the end of the exhaust stroke. While cylinder #1 is starting its intake stroke, cylinder #2 is starting its power stroke (take a look at the position of your cam lobes). Although the plugs fire twice during each of the four strokes, both cylinders are not on their power stroke at the same time.....they alternate.

see answer above. If you want the spark plugs to fire like all the other cars you own, you will need a distributor. On the Honda 600, they realized they could fire without using a distributor because if everything is working propely, firing on the exhaust stroke causes no problems since the gases are spent (not combustible).

This is called 'wasted spark' and many modern EFI cars utilize the
technique. You can get away with no cam angle sensor while running
sequential injection and wasted spark. Many so called coil on plug
engines actually fire pairs of coils together. Wasted spark actually
improves emissions by combusting any left over hydrocarbons before they
exit the tailpipe. It's A-OK :-)

Re: confused on how the engine operates
It's a 4 stroke. There's no distributor and only 1 set of points. The
spark is wasted on the exhaust stroke and is only utilized on the
compression stroke. A Honda CA77, 305 Dream operates the same way, both
pistons travel up at the same time, higher torque, but not as smooth a
running engine.
If it was a 2 stroke you would either mix oil with the gasoline or
there would be an oil injection system, we don't have either. The car
would not have valves or a camshaft. A Subaru 360 is a 2 stroke engine
but only has about 21 HP, though it has a distributor.

Re: confused on how the engine operates
thanks all for the replies, so i guess everytime the piston is at TDC
it is sparking and applying fuel since the cam is opening/closing the
valves.
