The passenger seat in my 71 sedan is in much better shape than the
driver's seat. Is it possible to switch the two or are they a matched
pair like new cars?

If you swap the driver side with the passenger side, the lever which
allows the seat back to tilt forward will be at the center near the hand brake.
Also, the lever which allows the seat to slide forward/back will be on the
opposite side. If this doesn't bother you, switch out the seats.
