Hi Gang,
Well, I finally took the car to a muffler shop and had them completely
replace all of the pipe and the old "muffler". It turns out that some
of the pipe was undersized and kinked at some of the bends. The muffler
was not a muffler at all. It turned out to be a spark arrestor from a
small gasoline generator! No wonder the car was having so much trouble
developing power. The guy at the shop used to own a 600 over 20 years
ago and even did a custom modification on one car to shorten it to
about 5 feet in length. He put in larger pipe and a single glass pack
and was able to replace the worn out cone gasket with something pretty
close. It sounds pretty good and the car now develops power. So, all of
the rattling, and most of the exhaust smell are gone! It's a much nicer
ride now!

just curious, how much did it cost you to replace the exhaust?

All parts and labor for $150. He took me under the car after he was done to show me his work. Very clean and professional. I'm really happy with it.

that isn't too bad. I might have to have mine redone too after the new engine goes in.
