Early Honda 600 sedans came with bias ply Bridgestone Skyway 5.20 x
10 tires. The coupes and later sedans came with 145 SR10's. They also
had an optional snow tire available. Tires are in the back of the
parts catalogs.
I use 145/80 10 Kumho for general purpose driving but don't advise
using them on the 5" or 6" wide mag rims. They just balloon out and
look stupid. For the mags rims you should use 165/70 R10's. Yokohama
is an outstanding tire with the dual compound tread. It's softer on
the outside edges for hard cornering.
I would also advise against installing the 165/70 10's on the stock
rims, too much sidewall flex. There are many other brands of 165/70
10's around from different suppliers of vintage Austin Mini parts.
8" wide Trailer tires on the mag wheels looks fantastic but are not
rated for highway use and drive horrible as only the center 2"
actually touch the round. I had one fall inside the rimwhile I was on
the freeway up around Oakland Calif back in the 80's, Did you see me?
Using 13" Mazda wheels are ok if you use a low profile tire like a
Pirelli P6. Don't forget though the wheel bearings won't last
longwith wider tires or 13" mags, the offsets are wrong and the
bearings just can't take the extra side force. The rear wheel
bearings are relatively tiny caged ball bearings, not tapered
bearings.
So here's how not to pay shipping from the Tire Rack when you get
your Kumho's. You find a Kumho tire dealer who wants to sell tires in
volume. You go there and say can you match the Tire Rack Price? If
they say yes, tell them you want the tires added to their *stock
order* from Kumho. You wait up to 2 weeks but order 6 so you will
have a spare and an extra one for an emergency. I do this frequently
and it works every time. I never pay any shipping and get my tires on
a carry out as I mount my own with hand tools. The tire dealer I use
has 2 computers, one is theirs and the other is a direct link to Tire
Rack for checking prices. Email me *off group* if you want to know
the dealer.
