Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Re: Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Jamie,
A member-to-member parts exchange is a fine idea. In that way we can share the parts that are excess to us, at reasonable prices. I took a look at what can be done at the group webpage and found that it is extremely simple to set up a database that any of us can edit. The only issue I see with it is that because it is SO open to editing, one member can play around with other member's information, which certainly would NOT be "playing nice". I suppose that each member that adds parts to the list would need to keep a separate record, and anyone requesting parts would need to verify the info with the parts-owner. Also, the database includes email addresses, but we have all already put our email address "out there" by posting to this group anyway...
I started the database off by adding one part in the format I think makes sense. It is not a part anyone wants - trust me! When you click on the link below you will likely have to sign in, then the database page will appear. If you see that the database is neglecting any crucial column of information, note it here and I will add it. I kept that bit of control for myself and the moderator for now.

Here are a few thoughts on the database idea...
- Consider the database an experiment. It may fizzle out or blow up for a million known and or unknown reasons. If you put a bunch of stuff on the database, do so with the knowledge that things may not go the way you hoped or expected.
- As I see it the idea here is to share parts with fellow enthusiasts at fair prices. Buying a part from another member to resell it on ebay will only make your 650+ fellow Honda 600 owners grouchy.

Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Hi Steve;
I looked at the site for the parts. I see two areas that would keep me
from using it. One, there are no set prices on many of the parts. I don't
use e-bay to sell parts because I think it puts a false value to many things
I see there. Second, the listing does not include the vehicle
identification information for the part. Just recently I went round and
round with a Honda 600 owner who was trying to replace a part that had been
previously replaced with the wrong part. Measurments taken and passed by
e-mail were not doing the trick. Honda used different sizes of various
parts during the same model run or year of production. There are several
sizes of rear wheel cylinders and the Sedan Parts manual has them listed
like a Coupe which is opposite of a Sedan for vehicles manufactured after
April of 1971.
We need to take the time to research a part being offered before just
charging in and throwing the wrong part into the mix. Many times I have
been called up by local Honda Dealerships asking if I want to buy a part one
of their parts guys ordered incorrectly. Then the part sits where it's not
going to be used. Worse, the new owner trys to make it work and ruens the
part. I would rather take the time to check out the part and get the
correct one then work in reverse.
But, Steve, I like the idea of listing all the parts.
What if we did it a different way. List all the parts with correct years or
variations and then owners just have to post their name by the part and add
a price.

Re: Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Bill,
The yahoo group database page is not nearly flexible enough to be used as the basis for the "whole catalog" idea. It only permits creating columns to fill with info, one line at a time. Also, one would need to start with an electronic version of the parts catalog, that one can then add columns to. I don't know if an all-electronic version exists (at least that one could get a copy of), and adding the editing functions that the yahoo group database page provides would be a huge project to say the least, and could not be hosted by the group site.
I think that it --needs-- to be kept casual, and be left to the members to recognize when there is more than one variety of a single part.
Here's a shorter link to the database page that won't get cut off by some email readers...

Re: Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Hello Everyone,
With all this talk of an electronic parts database, I remembered an old link I had saved.
I am sure someone else has seen this and maybe even already posted it - sorry if I am repeating someone else. This is for a Honda Dealer in Rhode Island called Majestic Honda.
They still have the N600 and Z600 in their parts directory. They even show retail price for each part (they don't have access to the parts - I've tried). Nevertheless this may provide a "retail" basis for what a part should be "worth" for your database. The pictures are barely clear enough to read but it is cool enough that they have them for all of the parts!

If anyone is interested i have my forum www.600forum.com with a
classified page, steve if you are interested i can send you the
enitre forum files and you can put it as part of your webpage and
give you the mod access so you can moderate it instead of having it
attached to my other domain, or if someone else wants to host it. I
dont want to take away from this group since so many people are on
it, just another page to visit and ask questions.

Re: Can we create a section on this page for used parts
Thanks for the offer, but I just thought I would keep it simple and use the yahoo group format. I may be writing you about how to administer the phpBB software though!
