I completely removed the booster today and piped the front brakes
directly into the master cylinder.
I now have better brakes than ever on it. The pedal is firm and if I
hit the brakes, the front wheels actually will lock up and skid (with
the booster in place, I had a fair pedal and no way the fronts would
lock up).
If you have poor brakes, I suggest you do the same thing on your car.
I just wish I had done this months ago. Now I have good brakes, no
vacuum leak, stable idle RPM. WOW....
I tried to take the booster apart, but even with it in a vise and a 3
foot bar, I couldn't get it to twist apart. (while pressing down on
it).

The brakes now feel strong and balanced. Obviously, the leak in my booster was bad enough that I was not getting any boost. On a side note, I have put new pads on the front, and rebuilt the back cylinders and the system was bled very well. As the master cylinder reservoir was full when I disconnected the one brake pipe, I was able to bypass the booster and not lose any brake fluid (it kept dripping out of the tube until I got it tightened in the master cylinder). I was expecting to have to rebleed the front brakes, but the pedal was so firm, I didn't.
If you have weak brakes, don't waste money on the booster. just do what I did and simply put the metal tube from it into the master cylinder. It's a 5 minute modification.
