Gas leak, could be several things, the overflow hose could be disconnected and this will cause a leak when you fill up and also you may have some holes in the top of your gas tank, rotten filler hose could be a source of the problem too. Pull the tank, its easy to do on a sedan and take it to a radiator shop and have it cleaned out, if the car sat for a while the gage might be stuck also, so it would not work properly. Drive it as much as you can, this goes for all owners.
