New record in Bonneville - J/Production - 99.299 mph, with one at 1

Post by jpro8071 »

Ran the car at the World Finals in Bonneville last week. Set a 2-way average of 99.299 mph which is the fastest for the class. We did have one great run later at 101.560 mph, but weren't able to back it up the next morning. Not too bad for gasoline (unblown) 700cc engine in a class with a 750cc limit. We bumped the 92.3 mph record to 98.569 last year, but really want to be the first to get that 100+ mph record.

I want to thank Miles, Mike and Bill - the car uses parts, tips and tools that they've made available. Also want to thank the folks on the list - it's been a great source of info while building the car.

hello. i dont want to intrude on you project, and i
really dont want to try to set a land speed record,
but what is you set up on your motor? i dont wnat
anything too indepth, i just want to get a little more
juice out of my motor, and what is the RPM on the
engin at that speed? i would like to know how high the
RPM can go before throwing a rod or the such. thanks

Hi Kasra, no worries - you aren't intruding (and if anyone out there
wants to try land speed racing I'm happy to give some tips/help - I
want to see the record stay Honda as long as possible. So the
competition is more than welcome.)
The motors are already pretty slick to begin with - 1 bhp/CID is
impressive for the late 60's/early 70's. Everything that we've done
to the motor isn't cost effective for the daily driver.
For the street user, the items I might consider would/could include:
1) A mild racing cam can help the performance - but you have to be
sure the valves aren't hitting the pistons. It's not a "bolt in" item
since you really want to check clearance - which I only do with clay
on the pistons. A bit of work to install. You often get a rough idle
and poor bottom end - but above 4000 it really comes alive.
2) Electronic ignition - which can increase your RPMs and reduce point
float. But you'll hit an RPM limit from the cam or exhaust or carb
anyway. Some day I'll post details of the system we built using a
Crane optical pick up and an MSD ignition box. Custom parts to do
this. No mechanical advance, but that's not too important.
3) A different carb could be worth looking into. We tried a down
draft weber (don't - didn't work at all) before going to the EFI. If
I didn't get the sponsor (who sold me the EFI at cost) I would have
been trying out a Mikuni carb. From what I've heard they can be tuned
pretty easy. But again - custom parts to make this work. A bigger
carb will help the top end, but hurt you on the bottom.
Those caveats stated, here are some of the details of our engine:
We've kicked the displacement up to 700ccs - this required custom
pistons and cylinders - plus re-routed oiling. The compression is
also so high (to deal with the elevation) that I have to run 110
octane there and here at home.
We are also running EFI - a single injector on a custom intake plus a
large number of sensors and an aftermarket ECU. Not cheap, plus took
some time to get it running right. Then there's the headers (no
heater box), head porting, larger valves, and mild racing cam.
From the other 600 racers on the salt it sounds like the majority of
the failures are either a cam bearing going (lack of oiling) or a
crank end bearing going (again often oiling, or wrong bearing
holder/crank combination.) I've yet to hear or see one have a rod
come apart. (I'm sure it could happen though.)

Did you mean no Vacuum advancer? 'cause I know they run w/o one, but
when a mechanical advancer is stuck on say my Honda motorcycle, it
wouldn't go past idle. ?????????
No mechanical advance, but that's not too important.

Yep - I also meant to include no vacuum advance. We had no problem
doing 82 on the salt with the electronic set up. The carb was the
limiting factor that year, kept loading up on us. (Plus the motor was
only 600cc and stock compression.)

jpro- you mentioned a crane cams electronic ignition; Did you use the
same one that summit is now selling? The XR-1? Did you have any major
drama getting that sucker in there? What MSD box did you use?
Also, do you have any leads on mild race cams for our 600s? I'd be
willing to get mine welded and reground but I want to find a proven
recipe before committing.
Congratulations on the FI, that's a pretty cool trick.
Thanks, Miles Elledge

It took me a while to dig up the old paperwork - did this almost two
years ago . . .
We used the just the optical trigger - Crane part #715-0020 attached
to the base plate that held the points. An MSD-6A box did the actual
triggering/firing - but you could probably use any electronic ignition
box. The way my dad fabricated it there was a buldge in the cover for
the pickup. I think you could do it and have the whole sensor fit
under the cover. But we wanted a really flat surface to attach the
wheel to. I'll post pictures (probably to the modmicros group) some
day soon.
