Starter problem

Post by JASON »

My starter has been acting like it has'nt been getting enough power
from the battery to turn engine. Very slow cranking. Has been
getting worse with time. The battery is fine, it's been tested.
Yesterday it would not turn over at all and then started smoking at
the starter motor! What is the problem and what should I do?

Take it to a local starter rebuilder and have it rebuilt. Things will change
in your future.

Well I took it to the starter shop and had it rebuilt. Looks great!
I installed it and just got click click ect. No engine turn.
Removed it tested ok. Re-installed the starter and got the same
thing. Battery is new and charged. Ground is good. Then I decided
to push start it on my street to see if the motor was siezed. I
rolled it down the hill... popped the clutch in second... car came to
a very sudden stop with no ingine turn over.
Perhaps the old starter which burnt up, burnt because of an engine
which did not want to turn. And the new starter is fine but can't
budge the motor.
My question, does anyone believe the motor is shot? The previous
starter symptoms were at each attempt to start it would take
progressivly longer to start. It was also more difficult to start
when warm.
The last time car was running, I simply drove it home and parked it,
with no apparent noise or otherwise. And it was to never start again.
How can I tell if motor is smoked?
Thanks Jason

Hi Jason;
Sounds like something is a-miss. Use a 17mm open end wrench on the pulley
side of the engine and try to turn it over with the trans in neutral. If it
turns open the oil filler cap and see if the cam is turning at the same
time. Also, when you took your starter to the rebuild shop did they put a
new bendex on it? For some reason there is a book out there that says a
bendex from a 510 Datsun will work, it doesn't.
If the Oil pump rod cracked and is not supplying enough oil to keep the
upper end lubricated, then there is a slow process that causes the cam to
eventually freeze up in the end bearings (caps).

Thanks for the advise, I had tryed to turn motor with wrench
already, with no success. However I had not tryed it without the
starter installed. I removed it and much to my delight it moved
with ease! I also removed the oil cap, and saw that the cam was
turning as well.
I don't know what a bendix is... however the housing end which the
starter is kept togerther by two bolts had one bold end snapped off
inside. The shop instead of extracting the broken bit, decided to
replace it with somthing they believed was a match.
I also failed to mention in my last posts that after installing the
starter it made a loud zing sound during ignition, then it would
just click click click after that. Which I would guess is the time
which it is becoming bound in the flywheel.
Do you think that is correct??
Thanks, Jason

sounds like the starter bendix, which is the star
shaped piece, is not fully engaging. making the zing
noise is the two edges of the flywheel and the bendix
barely touching each other. get the right bolt for
the starter and completely install it correctly and it
should turn over.

There is no substitute for the 16498 Honda 600 front starter housing,
not the same as Datsun or other. The Honda 600 starter shares some
parts with the Datsun Hitachi starter such as brushes, armature,
field coil, rear cap etc, but most importantly the 2 items that don't
cross are the front housing and starter drive (Bendix). Gear drive
has same amount of teeth, but is 1.5mm fatter than the 16498 part
causing the gears to bind.
You may have stripped teeth off your flywheel as well. Shine a
flashlight into the starter hole and rotate the engine looking for
broken teeth. With the starter out rotate the engine forward with a
17mm wrench. If you need a front housing, I have like 20 of them, can
trade you if you like to pay shipping both ways.

Starter problem

Post by Miles »

I already emailed the owner off list, but here's my opinion:
Sounds like when there is a load on the starter, it doesn't work. The
starter does not engage with the transmission at all. It engages with
the flywheel ring gear. If there is smoke, you will have probably
burned up the starter. I suggest you have it tested by a professional
who can also rebuild it. Most parts in that starter are shared with
Datsun 240 or 510 ecept for the front housing and definately not the
bendix. The Datsun bendix looks the same, has the same number of teeth
but is 2mm larger than the Honda 600 ones.
