Slopping shifting

Post by bigassmotors »

Greetings to all,
I am restoring a 1971 AN600 and I am very far along. I have two cars
I am making into one. Luckily, they have almost exactly the parts I
need when combined. I have successfully fixed most problems, but I am
now about to drop the engine to repaint the engine compartment and
polish the motor.
The car being fixed has an eight ball on the shifter knob and it
seems to have been too much weight for it, so the shifting is all
over the place and very sloppy. The donor car has a standard shifter
and is quite nice in shifting. My question is this, is the sloppiness
in the shifter linkage, or is it internal to the motor section?
Thanks to all,

My vote is definitely the shifter linkage, though I don't know quite what to
do about it, or even if it is "wrong".
Please keep us apprised of your progress on the engine compartment
cleaning - I am in the same position, though my engine is already out.
By the way, if you are using a single jack to lower the engine, get a second
person to guide the engine straight down from the top. When I lowered mine,
I thought I picked the balance point on the bottom of the engine...I was
wrong. There isn't a whole lot of room for the engine to move around,
especially front to back, as it lowers, and you don't want it banging up
your grille.
For what it's worth, I also used a piece of plywood between the jack and the
engine, placing it under the three lowest points of the subframe, to
distribute the weight.

It's the shiter linkage! Check the bottom U-joint,very commmon
problem. I rebuilt mine by grinding off rivet and replacing that
rubber block in there with a fabricated piece of hard
rubber.Actually it will shift pretty good with a fair amount of
slop! I don't like when it's too tight as it limits the throw,as I
like to really slam shift mine! riceburner006

The easiest way to fix the bottom shifter joint is to cut a section
of rubber tubing aprox 3/8" OD x 1" long. Jam it in the shifter in
the upper part of the lower joint, hold in place with a zip tie. Will
last forever.
Many a time the 2 plastic bushings in the upper joint are worn also
as well as the 2 bushings in the shifter mounting bracket. To cut
down the rattle in the shifter I take some rubberbands and wrap them
many times into the joint. Not much you can do about the lateral
bushings except to replace them.
All these tips and many others that have come up are available in the
old newsletters I wrote from 92-94 called Novelty News. Some of you
may have subscribed or have found some with a car you have purchased.
All the back issues are available but I will be assembling them soon
cutting out the personal stuff and old ads.
