head nuts on N360

Post by mattpalmeris »

What is the proper way to tighten the head nuts on the n360 and the
torque specs? I still have not yet found a manual.
Thanks, Matt

How many valves were bent? What was the cause? Did you try for the
manual that was on ebay?

I got the n360 from a honda dealer in Canada. It has been sitting in
and out of the showroom for 15 years. It is missing the air cleaner
box and due to this when it was out side rain water got in the carb
and into the head and caused some rust. I picked it up last week on
ebay after the dealer was selling it due to some vandals rolling it.

I don't no the history an the dealer doesn't ethier because nobody
there was around in 89. When I tried to turn it over by hand I
noticed to moved only a little. Somewhere along the line the timing
chain skiped some teeth and the valve was hitting the piston and when
I took the head off I found it was bent. I don't have a manual yet
and would like to see some wiring and engine break downs.
Thanks, Matt

If it's had water in the cylinders the rings will be seized in the
piston ring grooves. I recommend that you remove the cylinder block
and pistons, check con-rod big end bearings for wear and if ok,
lightly hone the bores, fit new rings and timing chain, replace bent
valve, get a manual and reassemble. Did you try for the manual in
Australia? There are probably others closer to you on ebay.

Matt you MUST check the big end bearings. Suzuki small car 62mm 0.5
and 1.00mm oversize rings fit the N360 pistons which are 62.5mm
standard. If 0.5mm o/size, use 1.00mm o/size Suzuki rings. This is
assuming the pistons are servicable. The ringlands get flogged on
worn pistons and the side clearance of the rings in the grooves must
be checked.

The engine turns over no problem and the cylinder walls and rings
are fine the water was trapped in behind the intake valve. The
problem I have is that the timing chain slips on the bottom sprocket
with the chain tensioner bolt is all the way in and then the problem
happens again where the piston hits the valve. I'm assuming the
chain is stretched as there seems to be allot of play when turning
the engine over before the cam moves. It seems to slip more when the
engine is turning backwards. Or does the chain tensioner have a
spring that might be weak? Or I guess the bottom sprocket might be
worn if someone tried to turn it over with the valves hitting the
piston. Any help would be appreciated. Also what is the part number
for an N360 timing chain and is it still available from Honda?
Thanks, Matt

Matt
you should still check if one or other of the pistons/ con rods has
excessive clearance with the pistons half way down the bore by
rocking the crank back and forth to see both pistons move at the same
instant.
The timing chain tensioner is spring loaded and hydraulicly loaded
when the engine is running. It has two O rings, at least the inner on
should be renewed. THe tensioner mechanism is in the crancase below
the cylinder block. You can see it when you look into the case with
a light. It has a rubber coated roller about 1.5 inch diameter on a
lever which rides on the tensioner - the rubber surface usually get
chewed by a bit but remains servicable. There is also a chain idler
wheel that fits at the top of the cylinder block immediately under
the head, about 3 inch diameter. When the chain is worn or if in
doubt replace it anyway. The ANZ600 site has specific instructions
on this. I don't know if the 600 takes the same chain but a 360
chain is a DID 219T. It is commonly used as a drive chain on karts so
check your local enthusiasts. Until the camshaft is assembled in the
cambox the chain will jump teeth. It is unlikely that the crank
sprocket is worn. Camshaft timing is a bit tricky. With the head
off you need to mark EXACTLY on the pully where Top Dead Centre is.
This is needed for correct camshaft timing so that the valves do not
hit the pistons (at worst) and runs properly at best (which is pretty
gutless anyway - but fun?).
What did you do about the bent valve?

Is the chain length the same as the N600 @ 33 1/4 inch, 108 pins

Thats my problem, who ever had this car before must have put on the
wrong length because mine is 104 pins. This should solve some
problems.
Thanks for your help corozon2. What type of car do you have?
