Doesn't it come down to heat? Since the 600's had an estimated top speed of 75MPH I'd think the heat on the tire would not be that great. So, non-DOT tires are likely to be safe since the 600's aren't going to be pushed to hard.
On the freeway I typically cruise between 60 and 70MPH. So, the heat on the tires is likely to be low.
What do you folks think?

Actually heat has nothing to do wit it. DOT just means they were tested and approved along with the extra insurance required. Non DOT can have a much higher rating if they were race tires, or exactly the same rubber if not. When the first KUHMO tires first came out the big truck tires saidright on them not to exceed 50 MPH. WHO knows.....use um or don't.

I believe h eat is very important.
Heat is not just imortant with regards to tires but pretty much anything with moving parts. I don't think DOT ratings matter much as long as the tire is not asked to do more than it was designed to do. That's all I was trying to say. ;o)

My Kumho tires are older, but no dry rot or cracking yet. I will get some new ones someday. Driving my Coupe around at below 65mph I don't see a need for speed rated tires. I will probably buy the Falken tires like the ones listed on Ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-NEW-FALKEN-SN ... 79&vxp=mtr
When I get my Coupe to go faster than 78mph, I will start to worry about a high speed blowout!

Tire heat is important. Our Honda 600's use 145/80R-10 tires.
I love math and racing, so think of this....
The formula is: section width X Aspect ratio X 2 divided by 25.4 + rim Diameter = tire Diameter.
So 145 X .8 = 116 x 2 = 232 divided by 25.4 = 9.13 + 10 = 19.13" tire diameter.
Now take 19.13" dia X 3.14159 = 60.1" tire circumference. About 5ft distance traveled per revolution. 5280ft in a mile divided by 5ft = 1056. So the Honda tires are rotating at 1056rpm's at 60mph! That is about twice as fast as my F150 tires are rotating. But the Honda tire only carries about 400 pounds per tire.
So weight, rpm, G-load....
I still think we are way below what these tires can handle.
I think any DOT approved tire will be fine.
My 2 cents

In the UK here we can get 165/70 10 and 145/80 10 tyres "off the shelf" its the spare parts we find hard to get!

In the UK here we can get 165/70 10 and 145/80 10 tyres "off the shelf" its the spare parts we find hard to get!

My 2 cents Lyle

Non DOT can have a much higher rating if they were race tires, or exactly the same rubber if not. When the first KUHMO tires first came out the big truck tires saidright on them not to exceed 50 MPH. WHO knows.....use um or don't.

Re: Kumho tires

Post by Kevin Lister »

Yeah, I love it when people do the math! Our cars are so light and with the low speeds they travel I would no concerns at all about using non-DOT tires from a technical point of view.
However, it is a good point that if you have a blow-out and you cause an accident and some officious individual points out you were running on non-DOT tires it could result in litigation that you just can't win. It's probably not worth it.
