Ticking engine

Post by Colin »

Well guys, I have check just about everything I can check. From what
I can tell, it doesn't seem like a problem with the timing chain or
valve train. I did notice that one of the rocker arm shafts was kind
of moving around in the clyinder head. Other than that everything
seems fine. One thing strange is that the loud ticking sound will
suddenly come and go. I am back to driving the car again, I figure I
will find the cause of the noise either when a part falls off, or
grenades.

your chain slack like Timocker sugested? The rocker shafts moving
side to side suggest that either the spring is missing and
you "locked down" your rocker in the wrong place, or weren't
carefull when tightening rocker adjusting bolt,as there is some
movement from side to side, and on a well worn motor the adj. bolt
will "push" the shaft one way or the other! riceburner006!

dude, it's not a problem with the chain tension, rocker shafts, or
anything that relates to the valve train. I am starting to thing that
I have a blown head gasket or an exhaust manifold leak. Happens
though I tracked down the ticking sound to be coming from the front
of the engine near the cly/head and manifold. Are these engines, know
for headgasket problems? Thanks,

How did your compression test go... rings appear fine? could be just cracked rings... do you get much  or any oil being blown up through the breather on the rocker cover??

Oh yes talking exaust.. I had stripp threads on my 600 and my 360 on one side of one pipe and this coused a ticking sound.. once I sealed with some RTV and tightend the bolts .. the tick stoped and the car ran much better also... ..
I've been thinking  LOL

Re: Ticking engine

Well, this sound still can be just about anything. It doesn't seem to
affect the performance on the car, but it is pretty loud. Sometimes
it goes away, but comes back a few seconds later. I did the
compression test, 57 and 60 psi (not sure how accurate my guage is),
does that seem right. I pulled off the breather hose and there is
blow by, but not alot. I tried to take off the oil cap while it was
running, and I got an oil shower. The exhaust manifold bolts look as
is they were stripped at one time, but I has able to tighten them up,
is there a gasket between the head and manifold? I pulled that cover
off the side of the cyliders, but the olny thing I managed to
accomplish doing so, was burning my hand. I have been an automotive
tech for 15 years now and have diagnosed hundreds of problems, but
this little two banger is kicking my butt. If there is anyone in the
Socal area that would like to listen to this thing and give some
advice, I would be happy to cruise it down. Everyone, thanks for your
help,
Colin
