Trans Gearing

Post by timk11 »

Early non synchro sedan transmissions were geared different than the
Synchro Sedan & Synchro Coupe. Both Synchro Sedan & All USA Sold
Coupes have same gearing (both are synchro). It's easy to tell if
your engine is synch or non synch.
N600E-10....... = non synchro sedan
N600E-15....... = synchro sedan
N600E-25....... = all coupe engines
It is possible to switch the transmissions between the models if you
change every part in the trans including the differential, forks,
shafts etc. However if you put a synchro trans in non synch cases you
will have to bust out a fin inside the bottom case and slightly
releave metal by the upward oil feed boss.
Which trans is better? Depends on your use. I live in the mountains,
the non synch has a lower 3rd than the synch, for me it's better for
hill climbing. I can also speed shift without the clutch 2-4 gears.
Typically the non synchro trans shakes itself apart and will trash
the diff gear & countershaft if the 6 diff bolts loosen and back out,
causes lotsa freeplay. You can also break the tranny if your main
bearing wears out and drops causing sideways interferance.
To avoid the diff from loosening, I get the diff housing spot welded
together so the halves don't rock around. The spider gears within
don't normally wear so there is really no servicing needed in there.

Thanks Miles!
do you by chance know the exact gear ratios for 3rd and 4th for the
different trasminssions?

I was going to give that info, but I think I sold my sedan shop
manual. The Synchro gearing is: 1st 2.470/1, 2nd 1.565/1, 3rd 0.967,
4th 0.675, diff 3.739. Anyone with the Blue Shop Manual will have the
crash trans info.
