RX-7 wheels

Post by isettakurt »

Recently, there was a post regarding replacement wheels for the Honda 600. Mazda RX-7
wheels were
mentioned as an alternative.
I have replaced the stock 10" wheels on my Z-Coupe with early 13" RX-7 wheels.
The main reason was because of the cost of 10" tires. (When you can find them).
My Z-Coupe's RX-7 wheels use a 175/50-13 low profile tire, which is actually cheaper
than a stock 10" tire. (Go figure).
Overall diameter of the tire is just 1" more than a stock 10" tire. No rubbing at
all. And it helps keep the RPMs down a bit when cruising the freeway at 75 mph.
The width of the tire looks pretty aggressive when mounted on the tiny Honda. They
just barely stick out from the side of the wheel wells.
The wheels I have are the stock RX-7 type. There was another optional RX-7 wheel that
I think looks even better.
I have posted pictures of the car at:

Ride was essentially unchanged.
Handling, on the other hand, was greatly improved.
Amazing what a tire twice the width of the original is capable of.
Mini-Coopers run and hide when they see me coming....

When going to this site, there is a photo of several different wheels
that was available for the Honda 600. I need 1 wheel that is like
the one on the lower left. Mine are COSMIC brand. Does anyone have
1 orphan wheel that needs a home to make my set complete?

Kevin,
I think I have the "orphan" wheel you are looking for. I'm not positive but I think the wheel that I have is black and silver though. I will try to get a picture of it and send it to you ASAP.

Can you send me more details on which tires you installed?
Thanks!

Re: RX-7 wheels vs 10" Tires

Post by timk11 »

10" tires are cheap, as a parts retailer I can get them for $27.00ea.
Retail is around $35, you will probably pay $60ea tire for the Mazda
wheels for a performance 50 or 60 Series tire, plus wreck your wheel
bearings twice as fast from the extra load and tweak forces exerted,
not to mention lower your hill climbing ability and fast
acceleration. The only benefit to Mazda wheels is 110mph freeway
speed! Oh. the other problem with running the low pro tires on the 13
or 12" Mazduh rims is when you hit a bump, it drifts sideways
rapidly.

Miles,
Who's the supply source for the 10" tires? I've a TN360 pickup that I
need new tires for.

I don't know what else I can tell you.
Like I said- the size is 175/50-13.
Doesn't matter who the manufacturer is.
For what it's worth, mine are made by Remington.
What else do you need to know?

Ellis, Miles and All:
I was pleased to find that Coker Tires is now offering 10"
Michelins. They are more expensive than the alternatives, but they
are Michelins... http://www.coker.com/default2.asp
