Z600 Overcharging Problem

New rectifier, new ignition coil, and new voltage regulator...  I started the engine, the volts at the battery are 18 volts, and the new rectifier is getting so hot the black paint is starting to smoke..  What do you think is going on? Also with the ignition off, I still get .5 volt at the coil.. And sometimes the engine won't shut off..

Disconnect the regulator and see if the volts on the coil goes away. Maybe regulator is dead or wiring problem, or connection wrong on regulator?  or a short in the wiring?

Something is shorting to another wire or ground directly.  This may in tale unwrapping all the wire harness in the engine compartment   Using an OHM meter will help if you unplug wires and see if any of them are going to ground that aren’t supposed to.
With the rectifier, it only goes in one direction, 3 wires to one, and not the other way.
Here an OHM meter will also help as you don’t need to have anything attached to power.
A wiring diagram will also help.

Going back to the aftermarket voltage regulator wiring. The one with the 23500-29902
part number is the ones I used to sell all the time. It is a mechanical unit with points
and all. The company I bought them from added their own pigtail adapter to plug into
our stock harnesses but the colors don't all match.
From the regulator: Yellow to Yellow, Black to Black (ground), White to White,
White with Red stripe to White with Green stripe, White with Blue stripe to Black with Yellow
stripe, and White with Black stripe to White with Red stripe. That's all 6.
OK, so now I bought a bunch of Datsun regs that they say they used to use before but
the lid is black and riveted on. It has 6 wires that go through the bottom and the regulator is
very lightweight (7.3 oz). On the wires each color has an ID tag: Black is E for Earth (Ground), Black
with Yellow stripe is IG for Ignition, White with Black stripe is F for Field?, White with Red stripe is L
for idiot light?, White with B for Battery?,Black with Yellow stripe is IG for Ignition?.
