Voltage Regulator Substitutes

Hi All,
Has anyone had experience adapting voltage regulators from other makes for our use? I am particularly interested in a electronic unit, I suspect that one from a Datsun might work. Any thoughts on this?

I'm thinking of upgrade some electrical devices on my N600 (rectifier, fuses box, v regulator). I found this link which may help : http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2026172, although the owner did not replace the v regulator.
I will register on this group to mail the person who owns this sedan. Unless he belongs to this group as well !
