Miles and Dale;
    Agreed, 48K is low by most standards, but it sounds like a Motor Home car to me in which case it had plenty of travel time.  As to having an original exhaust system, I have to disagree.  Not running a car much causes water to build up in the low areas which causes rust out.  Not just Honda's but all collector cars have the same problem.
    A good way to evaluate the engine being original is Honda's use of Honda Bond (a silicone based sealer) on the engine cases.  And the gasket material Honda used for the cam box to head has been red, gray and black.  The gasket to the cylinder to case has also been red, gray or black.  Making a determination on this is not a sure thing.  However a total view of the engine compartment having all the original clamps, hangers, high tension wire to Spark Plug connections, labels, bolts, nuts and screws in place is a good indicator of low mileage cars.  Also, wear of interior seats, door panels, carpet and windshield seals in place and not warn or deteriorated to a great degree.  But even these items can be damaged from the elements when not stored properly.
    So it boils down to documentation, if the paper work, maintenance records, history of ownership, DMV records all indicate a low mileage car then it can be a fair and educated guess that it is a 48K car.
Just my cut -
Bill

Hi Bill,
  Thanks for the info on the sealer used for engine assembly.   I am the one who mentioned the exhaust system being original.  With 48K on the engine,  the entire exhaust system should be in good condition and if there is one item which may have needed replacement,  it may be the muffler.  The real giveaway for me with the Z600 (other than looking at the overall condition as you described and documents) would be if the muffler looked original and it had the Honda tailpipe with the resonator can.  The tailpipe with resonator was expensive when purchased from Honda and replacement pipe sold by Midas cost $7 or less.  I haven't seen a Z600 with a tailpipe with resonator in 20 years.  Anyone on here have an original style tailpipe on their Z600?

Hi Dale;
I know it was you; and agree that the muffler and resonator on a AZ 600 went fairly quickly as did the center muffler pipe.  The only ones that lasted had holes drilled in them to allow water to run out.   And, your correct that most owners rarely replaced the resonator.  But, a number of them were replaced or Honda would have scads of them laying around.   Also, they can be custom made at many GOOD muffler shops.  I had one made up along with a center pipe and you couldn't tell the difference from factory.
All I am saying is that without documentation these as other old cars can be said to be original low mileage cars and they are not.  I have speedometers that read less than a thousand miles on them and look just great, even a tach that still has a nice Red line mark on it.   There are even companies that will rechrome the plastic.  Given the cash used, anything can be made new again, anything.
