cracked

Post by mterrens »

My hatch has developed a crack.  Damn!
It starts on the outside and stops just after the first turn.  It has not yet reached the surface that approaches the glass.  I want to prevent it from getting bigger.  Is there a preferred product - glue, epoxy, something - hopefully black in color - that I can squeeze into the crack from the back, that would stop it from growing, and not be too noticeable from "10 feet"?
Thanks much,
Steve

I think you can drill out with a glass/tile drill VERY carefully the end of the crack.  IF not the crack will still run.  Then use the resin injection to fill the hole and if that won’t go in the crack bond something on the back of it – have a word with a windscreen ‘chip repair’ as they use this resin.  Essentially it can be stabilised if you can drill out the end so there is nowhere for it to run (technique used on aircraft) and then stabilise the stress on it.

After having the coupe out in the sun for an hour or so I find that the crack has closed entirely.  Shortly after going back into the shade, the gap opens again (it is a SMALL gap).   I am thinking now that a small plate epoxied over the crack in the back (as you mentioned) might be in order - put on while the hatch is warmed up and the gap is closed.  If I fill the crack with anything, the next time it gets back in the sun it'll want to expand again - bad.  Maybe if I drill at the bottom of the crack from the back, and not come through to the front, and fill THAT, that would help as well.  I would have to take the hatch off to do that - not my favorite idea.
