Cooling fan

Post by mondei »

Well I own a few Honda's, my current daily driver has a wee
situation with the cooling fan. Last night on a family outing there
was quite some sqeeling and then a little black smoke from under the
hood... agggh oh no!!! we it is not that bad, the bearing on the fan
itself appears to have siezed, the other 2 bearings are very free
running.
I wanted to replace the bearing on my 600 housing but I had real
trouble even trying to budge the fan off, So terefore one needs some
advice of the best way to approch this, I do have a spare fan and
all, but that does not solve the problem of fixing the broken one!
If anyone is wise enough about this to help me, it would be very much
appreciated, and I would wish that person a very merry xmas and happy
new year.
Well I give all those wishes to all the group anyway
Have a great one!!!
Kind Regards

Cooling fan

Post by Mark »

Hi what is the best way to disasemble the Cooling fan my bearings
are bad and my pulleys are all bad I'm thinking about making new
pulleys from bar stock 6061 t65 allum. Can the pulley on the
crank be pressed off I have not removed it yet so I don't know
how it is assembled.
Thanks

Hi Mark;
I have some good crank shaft pulleys.  The crankshaft pulley has a timing mark on it which is critical to timing the engine.  And, no they shouldn't be pressed off.  If they were pressed off getting them back on correctly will be a real test of skills.

Hi Bill ; My pulleys worn from looks like the belt sliping. What do you get for the crank shaft pulley? Also whats the best way to
get the fan pulley off? I will be making the other pulleys I'm a machinist so it's not a big deal to make what I need just time consuming.
I live in Minnesota I wish I was closer to you I would just have you fix some of the things that need to be done I will be fixing the
rack the steering shaft is wiggling must be the rubber on the bushings I will make UHMW sleeves hope I can get it out without
moving the engine.
Thanks Bill have a great day....

How about the cooling fan bearings? I too need to replace these. My fan had a broken blade so I bought a complete unit but the bearings don’t feel as good as my old unit. I tried to remove the steel pulley with a gear puller but it broke the pulley and never budged on the shaft, do you take the fan blade off instead then press out the shaft? I see some people selling some NOS fan bearings once in a while so I am guessing they are replaceable. Has anyone had any luck replacing them, any tips?

You hit the nail on the head. The fan blade comes off first. Then the shaft comes out.
Then you can press out the bearings. it doesn't take much force to remove the fan.

Mike you said your fan has a broken blade let me know how the fan press off I thought I read some were that you take
the pulley off first but I'm not sure what works so I don't won't to wreck mine I need a new pulley not a fan.
Thanks
