transmission problem

Post by Tom Rapini »

So the light turns green and I try to go but I just get this grinding noise as if its halfway in gear. I try another gear... same thing. Even reverse. Glad these cars are so easy to push !
The shifter feels normal, whether I'm pushing it up or down, so I don't think that's the problem. Its like a main drive gear in the tranny has moved away from its mate ! Anyone have an idea what's going on before I start tearing it down ?

Tom;  If the pin in the shift rod is not loose or gone, then take a look at the Gear shift arm - Honda calls it the “Arm, Gear shift” (Part No. 2441- 551-020) attached to the end of the shift rod.
Yes, it means pulling the engine and flipping it over to look at the trans mission.

Check your drive shafts, if the nut is not realy tight the inner of the wheel hub is grinded out.
Bram.

Thanks, Bill !
I think I see what your referring to in figure 6-25 on page 91 of my Coupe Shop Manual. Part 8 is called the Gear Shift Arm and I can see that if it were loose it could affect gear engagement in all directions.

I think your speaking to the older Chevies,  see here from the Honda Sedan and Van shop manual, if you have 145 lb-ft of torque on your front
Bearings they are tight.  I normally set my impact wrench at 100 lb-ft and tighten them up.

If the car feels like it is trying to move, it is possible the problem is not the transmission itself. The first time My car refused to move even though it seemed to be shifting into each gear correctly, I discovered that there is a set of rubber shock absorber things that are on the clutch side of the engine that smooth out the transfer of power from the engine. They had just turned to mush.
