Unfortunately, someone lost the keys to my Z600. Does the lock cylinder have a number code stamped on it, and can a good locksmith makenthis key without having to have the car present ( as the steering column is locked).
If not, how easy (or difficult) is it to remove the entire ignition switch to bring to the locksmith. Can anyone please guide me though this switch removal?
I recall that this was previously discussed, but I can't seem to find the posts.
Thanks to everyone for your help.
Chas

Re: Ignition codes and switch removal
Hi Charles,
I am a full time locksmith. There is no code stamped on the steering column mounted ignition switches.
Key Making & Code Location:
If you have the owner's manual that came with your car the dealer was supposed to write in the key code. From the key code and a code book or computer program such as Code Source and a code cutting machine (or Depth keys) a new key can be generated.
Impression a key. A key blank is used to make the new key. Basically the blank is filed both sides to knock down the nickel plating. Then using small vise grips with key fully inserted a twisting motion to the right will make tiny dents or bright marks on the blank. Using an extra fine round or teardrop shaped file the bright spots are filed. This process is long and tedious for me but someone with a keen eye can do it in 10 minutes.
And my favorite is I have a huge collection of used keys, usually one will fit.
The switch is installed with sheer bolts. I like to slice the sheer bolts with a dremel blade and unscrew them. I guess you could get new or make new sheer bolts but I just reuse them.
Typical cost to impression a key is $25-35.00 depending on time and to cut a key by code is about the same but will be exactly correct and work the best. Your ignition key blank is X51 or AA2 fits MG or Austin.

Re: Ignition codes and switch removal
There are (2) secure bolts(their heads snap off at assembly). I dremmeled slots in them and than unscrewed them. Very easy. I have done it to (2) cars so far.
