My master cylinder was rebuilt by previous owner and is leaking into the car and has saturated the carpet pad with brake fluid. It is my understanding that it probably needs to be rebuilt again and machined. If that is the case it may need to be sleeved in brass. Is it possible to simply machine the cylinder? If so how much material can be taken out and still have the seals work?
If I go the brass sleeve option does anyone have a good recommendation for a shop that can do it and approximation of what it should cost?
Thanks, Henri
brake master cylinder machining
Re: brake master cylinder machining
I had White Post Restorations do my TN360 master and wheel cylinders, not cheap but nicely done with no issues to date.

You can't machine a cylinder that is aready the correct diameter. Honda's piston to wall clearance was only about .003". We can hone the cylinder with extra fine stones. You can't use the ball type hone because you won't see all the pits and when you have enough pits you will have a leaky master cylinder. You will need to get it sleeved. If you got a hold of a 3/4" master you could get it bored, reamed & honed out to a 13/16". Any black areas left after honing are pits and corrosion.

Re: brake master cylinder machining
Thanks Miles, As luck would have it my car came with a 'large box of parts' including an extra 3/4" brake cylinder (no guts in it and visible pits). I'm sure a local machine shop can bore and hone it to 13/16 size for much less than a brass sleeve job. Are there 13/16 seals that will work once it's over bored? Do any other parts need to be upsized?
Thanks! Henri
