Hi, I wanted to get some parts Zinc plated under the hood of my 1972 coupe. I was trying to see what was zinc plated from the factory.
Here is the list so far:
* Brake booster, can only?
* Wiper bracket
* Hood prop rod?
* Brake reservoir bracket
* Oil filler cap?
* Hood latch assenbly.
* Distributor cover
* Oil filter cover
* Clutch cable bracket
* Throttle cable bracket
* Hose clamps.
* Some bolts/screws
* Horn, front black?
* Head light buckets
Any corrections or additions welcome.
Thanks
Lyle

Re: Zinc Plated parts
Everything on the Honda 600 that was steel was zinc plated. Not everything was gold zinc some was clear zinc and there's no rhyme or reason on the colors, pick whatever looks best with your paint. I sent you a bunch of pics and a place to get it done dirt cheap a few days ago of parts I had done.

Re: Zinc Plated parts
Eastwood offers a spray can that duplicates the gold zinc look. Very good and easy to use. And a whole lot cheaper than plating a bunch of parts.
Re: Zinc Plated parts
Hi Miles, thanks that will be great. I have a few parts ready for my Opel-GT and my Triumph that will need zinc plating also.
I have lots of parts that I manufacture plated, but never with zinc.
It should be cheap, usually they have a minimum lot charge.
I called a few shops locally.

Re: Zinc Plated parts
Your Triumph parts are probably Cadmium which is virtually outlawed where I live. Not sure about the Opel, old German stuff like your Opel possibly ? and my 1956 Zundapp was Cad.

Re: Zinc Plated parts
Miles, I also heard that Cad plating is outlawed. The Zinc will look good in place of the cad. I don't want to paint the parts, the zinc will look more original.
I found a couple Plating places a few miles from my shop, $85 minimum charge. I will stop by next week and see what they have.
Any tips before I go in?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Zinc Plated parts
I have an article that came out in my newsletter all about zinc plating, I already sent your parts, but will see if I have a news letter to send you. Basically make sure there are no aluminum parts as the Muriatic acid process will destroy them. Remove all grease and oil before sending them out. If you have rusty parts try to clean them but if you bead blast the parts they will not be shiny new looking when you get them back - dull & pitted. You can send out parts with black rubber coating, the process does not disturb the rubber.
I sent out Honda s600 window regulators to be zinc 1 plated. They came back with a rattley noise. The gears were aluminum, not visible from the outside. Luckily I had 2 sets.

Re: Zinc Plated parts
Thanks Miles, it's nice to know a little bit before I go.
I will only be doing under hood parts for now.
Good point about sand blasting, it always looks like a satin finish under most plating operations.
What do you use for cleaning up steel parts plating?
I have used a wire wheel, sand paper flapper wheel, buffer with red nylon?
I get alot of Aluminum parts hardcoat anodized, some nickle plating of steel parts and passivation of stainless parts.
Learn something new everyday.
