still at it

Post by deantds »

hi. well its me again with the still but better problem...it wont idle at 1100 rpms. i have replaced the carb with a tested one and replaced the points, spark plugs, wires and vacume hoses. it now trys to idle but about every two or three seconds it gets irratic and misses a beat. it then goes bellow 800 rpm and some times stalls or some times corrects it self to idle. question... could the vacume advance be going bad and if so can one be gotten?... any other ideas that you might have??? thanks dean

I have the same problem with mine.  When I had my engine redone I was hoping the that would fix it.  Low compression and all but it still misses some.  After it is painted I am going to check the vacuum lines and booster so see it that is the problem.  It does run better when warm but still does it and the idle is not always the same.  Hopefully this week it gets painted than I can put it all back together.  We have had two cars shows here already with a lot of old cars,  Makes me want to go driving..

Check your carb solenoid and make sure it's working.  I had that problem.

Re: still at it Carb Issues

Post by Miles »

Check intake manifold for cracks through the rubber at the bottom side. Replace the oring on the intake manifold. Throttle shaft wear is a huge culprit especially if you dipped your carb in chem-dip. When you dip your carb you will destroy the seals on the throttle shaft. When I rebuild carbs, I replace them with new nitrile or Viton seals.
To get to those seals: one is under a snap ring and washer, then under a delicate brass retainer. The other side is under the throttle actuator under the delicate retainer. Retainer can be removed and tapped back in to place. Oring size is aprox 5/16" ID and about 1mm thick (.040").
Carb solenoid must be grounded to the engine, not to a screw on the carb believing that there is grounding on a carb through a cable or something. If you think the vac advance is bad, unplug and seal the vacuum tube. If you put a different tube on the vacuum adv you can suck on it and see if it holds vacuum. If you use the tube on the car it will taste like gasoline, which is ok for me, but others my not enjoy.

Dean;
I had a similar problem.
You have to go back and remove all the parts from your carb and clean them.
Find a small needle or I like to use Dentist root canal hand drills, they
really clean everything right. Use compressed air and carb cleaner to get
into all the areas. Then put it back together. Things should clear up.
