71 N600 Engine failure

Post by harpermunro »

Got a 71 N600 that is in pretty good shape overall. Blew the motor
last week. Believe that it is result of low oil (however dipstick
never read low). Anyhow, got what I think was about $4,000 dollar car
with a blown motor. Live in socal (near LAX). Quotes I have gotten so
far are about $3500 for complete rebuild. Not too crazy about that
because car will still only be worth about $4,000 running. I think I
could part it out and make 1,500 to 2,000. Hate to do that because it
is complete and pretty good little car. I have rebuilt a VW motor and
a american engine before (been a while). I think I could rebuild this
motor myself, but specific specs and parts are not readily available to
me. Would be ready to tackle the project if there are rebuild kits
available with information. Dont want to learn any expensive lessons
the hard way. I want to get out of this pickle without loosing much
more money and not destroying a car. You guys got any suggestions?
Thank you for any input,
Harper

If you do decide to pull the motor, it comes out downwards. I had an "oops" with one that I used to own. Please learn from my mistake. The problem was that the chain tensioner was bad and at that time, I didn't know were to get the proper parts. This group is your best source for information and parts that there is.

There is a VERY knowledgeable 600 guy in the San Gabriel Valley that
has a lot of parts etc. He has done some extraordinary restorations.
I believe his email is mercilessmings@.... You may want to find
a running beater and swap the motor.

All, you know the $3500.00 Harper is talking about is not a bad price to have the engine, transmission and final drive pulled apart and put back together again.  You will have much more in the power train of any other car to have the same work done.
Placing a value on your car has to be included in the price of a replacement.  If you use your Honda 600 as daily transportation then you are looking at a lot more savings than the $3500.00 your spending on repair.  First you own the car, second in california it does not have to be smogged, registration is a pinch, maintaining it is much less than many others that get half the milage from a gallon of $4.50 black gold.
And, if you have the space and tools to rebuild it yourself, the online assistance has never been better.
Now you said you blew the motor, that can mean a whole bunch of things, a rod through the front, or seazed the cam because the oil pump went, or what else?
