Hi Paige,
When you attempt to perform your record breaking run , you may want to try it when the temperatures are cooler (and at a low elevation, if possible).   This will give you a higher air density.  Try for a tailwind, too.  And keep the windows closed to reduce air drag and turn off all accessories (radio, fan, lights) to reduce loads on the engine.
Good luck,
Dale

ok--IT'S TIME FOR THE TRUTH!!!
just got finished with the "high speed"run--
DRUMROLL, PLEASE-----
45 MPH =3,250RPM
50 MPH =3,600
55 MPH =4,000
60 MPH =4,300 70 MPH =5,000
75 MPH =5,500
80 MPH =5,800
85 MPH =6,200
87 MPH =6,300
I BACKED OFF AFTER ABOUT 15 SECONDS, AS I REALIZED THAT EVEN THOUGH I MAY HAVE EEKED OUT AN EXTRA MPH (OR NOT), IT WAS NOT A WISE THING TO DO (ON SO MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS), SO I MUST CONCLUDE THAT EITHER I WAS TRAVELLING DOWNHILL OR THE PLANETS WERE PERFECTLY ALIGNED THAT FIRST ATTEMPT, OR I MISREAD THE SPEEDOMETER, OR MY MEMORY WAS RIDICULOUSLY OPTIMISTIC (MOST LIKELY, GIVEN BILL'S LOGICAL EXPLANATION)
BOTTOM LINE IS THIS
WHO REALLY CARES?--THESE CARS AREN'T EVER GOING TO BE POWER HOUSES OR RACE WINNERS--BUT THEY ARE A BLAST TO DRIVE AND PARK--I FIT INTO A MOTORCYCLE SPACE TODAY AT A VERY CROWDED FLEA MARKET AND WAS GREETED BY A BUNCH OF SMILING, CURIOUS ONLOOKERS WHO DETAINED ME FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES WITH A BUNCH OF QUESTIONS---
THIS CAR WILL LIVE OUT IT'S REMAINING DAYS WITH ME AT 65-70 TOPS---
I'VE OWNED MANY INTERESTING CARS, BUT NONE HAS REWARDED ME WITH SO MUCH ATTENTION AND GOOD EXPERIENCES--

Obviously you have never owned an Isetta or a Messerschmitt. The
Schmitt will do 70 tops and the Isetta will do 53 tops. The Honda
rocks in the performance catagory for me. I can't wait to get my
coupe.

Paige;
You need to have your guages calibrated.  I have an electronic RPM meter that I use to check my engines, and the guages on my Honda's are so far off that what I think I am doing is normally about 5 MPH off at 60.  It's hard to judge by the traffic around you because they are all passing you on the freeways.

Greg,
They say a Messerschmitt will go faster backwards than forwards
because of the aerodynamics. They also say, good luck and it will
become unstable & flip over. For those who don't know.... a
Messerschmitt has 4 speeds backwards also. I used to drive a '58 SW
Isetta to work every day. It was happy to go 45 to 50. We had my
friend's BW Convertible 250 on the freeway once, We almost hit 55.
His problem was the seat kept catching on fire!
I also had 2 BMW 600's, a 500 Bianchina, a 500 Nuova, a 850 Spider, 3
X19's, 60 Honda 600's, 16 Honda S cars, several Subaru 360's -
coupe/van/pick up, 2 Berkeleys, 4 Isettas, KR200 Messerschimtt,
Zundapp Bella R201, Fuji Rabbit 150, Rabbit 200, Austin Mini,
AirCycle hovercraft, '64 Sunbeam Alpine, 1958 TR3A, 1962 TR3B, 1960
Morris Woody, 1960 Bugeye, 40+ various motorcycles including a 1948
Indian Chief, Marusho (BMW 500 copy), Simplex Servicycle and more,
I'm just getting too old to remember.
Currently my oddness vehicle collection in not much and am down to a
Honda CB550, Buell Cyclone, 1970 Triumph TR25W, 1987 Yamaha YSR50,
1964 Honda s500 convertible, 1987 Mitsubishi VanWagon. Zero Honda
600's - but have 4 more lined up as soon as I get more room and get
done with Betsy's car and Linda H's car and Michael B's engine etc.

Re: Going for 70+ in a Schmitt

Post by Greg Hahs »

Aerodynamically, yes, practically. no. Maybe about 15 to 20 for a
couple of seconds. Steering from the back is left for forklifts. I
just recently sold a Morris Traveler that I put a 1275 and a Datsun 5
speed in and also a Bugey Sprite that I built for speed and handling.
My wife wouldn't even get in it. I have a couple of pretty rare cars
I've lucked not getting, a 1939 Crosley Convertable that we are
repainting the colors of my daughters wedding for them to drive off
in. A Goggomobil Dart, one of 8 in the states. A 56 Isetta Bubble
Window Cabriolet, and the 55 Schmitt. As for practicality and fun,
these little Hondas are a kick! I absolutely love them. I just need
to get the rocker noise in the sedan taken care of. We can't hear
each other at 90 mph! HA!!!!! Just teasing. It's funny, it goes right
up to 75 though. I will never try to get any more out of it.

Re: Going for 90+

Post by Paige Hunt »

hi, bill--
i thought of that, too--so i ran the car at a steady 60 (indicated) and used my watch to time 1 minute---did it twice---the odometer indicated exactly 1 mile travelled for one minute, so i'm prettty sure i'm spot on (or reasonably close) at 60---could be different at higher speeds--and i still have no idea if the tach is right--my friend with the gps was still asleep (it was 9am sunday morning)---so those numbers may not be 100% accurate--but i think they're pretty close--it really doesn't matter much to me anyway--bottom line is it's a really fun car to own
when i have the time (read money) i'll start dealing with the little details such as gauge callibration and proper trim pieces for the roof and other incorrect details, but for now, i'm broke and up to my eyeballs in more needy projects--a"64 t-bird and a 1960 mark 9 jag with chevy runnning gear---i'm just happy when i can drive them!
thanks for all your patience and advice
