Head liner redone

Post by asofdjhkljashdl »

Hi again. I have another tip to pass along to you. My head liner in the
car was quite discolored and had stains along both sides from something
above, probably the wires that hold it in. I received some great
information from Bill Colford about how to remove it and how to repaint it.
He turned me onto a SEM product called Phantom White.
Although Bill suggested that I remove the liner, and I'm sure it's easy
enough to do if you have more confidence than I have, I was very much
afraid to mess with taking it out and putting it back in place. I did not
want to deal with getting together the tools I would need and was afraid I
would rip it or that I would not get it back in place so well.
I ended up contacting a fellow named Thad at www.vinylpro.com with an
email address of mailto:vinylpro@... . He has been incredibly helpful
to me.
What he did was to mix the SEM Phantom White paint into a bottle that
allowed me to roller it on in place! Instead of taking it out, I have
simply painted it with a roller. Specifically he sold me these items:
Sem soap $6.22 (a liquid soap that I washed the liner with first)
Sem WB vinyl prep $8.50 (some chemical he suggested that I again sort of
just washed the liner with after I used the soap)
pint of Phantom white SC $18.97 (bottle of paint)
small crosslinker $4.94 (a chemical you add to the paint before you use it)
foam roller 4" .61 (you can get a roller handle at your local
hardware) (I highly recommend you use a foam roller and not a foam brush)
shipping was about $6.50
I used a small artist paint brush to cut in all around the edge of the
liner. There is enough give so you can get the brush under the metal body
edge quite easily. You have to be careful not to get it on the body, but
if you do, just be prepared to clean it up right away. I then took the
roller and painted the entire liner. It's awkward painting above your head
and you should have a drop cloth to cover the car as you do this, but it's
not so bad. I did 90% of it sitting in the driver's seat and climbed in
the back only to do the last rear section.
So far I have only put one coat on. It looks GREAT. As it is now, it is
so much better than before, but it really needs a second coat to be
ideal. It will take no more than 30 minute to put the second coat
on. This SEM product is not heavy/thick, so you DO keep the vinyl texture
in the liner.
Just thought I'd let you all know my experience. I am grateful to Bill for
his getting me started in the right direction (along with all your other
help, Bill!).
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
