Well guys, I have my engine all put back together, everything came
out perfect, but when I went to start it, it turned over for a while,
then it stopped. My damn starter went out, 6 feet under. The starter
drive pulls out quikly, but the motor turns slow and makes a humming
sound. I bench tested it with the same results. I took the starter
apart hoping to see a problem, but saw none and the starter still in
dead. I wish I could just pick one up at autozone. Does anyone have a
good used or rebuilt unit they would sell me? Let me know,
Colin (real proud of his vw right now)
gettin it running- Help?
Re: gettin it running- Help?
When my starter died I found a local generator/alternatorrrr/starter business that quickly repaired it. Check locally. The starter is not exotic.

starters
The starters are easy to work on, I rebuild alot of them myself when
I have the time. The rebuild houses generally only put in brushes and
clean the contacts in the solenoid, then they put it back together
wrongly with the throw bolt going from right to left which then makes
it so you can't put the upper mounting bolt back in.
I found years ago the starter is same one used in many Datsun's,
models 510 & 240Z early models. The parts that are different are
front housing and Bendix. Bendix has same amount of teeth but is
larger in diameter. The front housing is oriented right instead of
left. The only other thing to watch out for is the length of the
armature.

Re: starters
I have an extra starter that I was going to sell at one time, but made the mistake of taking it apart. I wanted to clean it up and make sure all the brushes were good before I listed it on e-bay. When I went to put it back together, I ran into my problem. The large philips screw heads on the side. I was not able to unscrew them. Because of this I now have a starter in a small box that I can't get back together. Any ideas on how to get these screws out?

starters
are there any starters off of later models that fit the 600z
Re: starters
No.
The only other starter that is close in a 1970's model Datsun 510. You
have to change the bendix & front cover to the Honda 600 parts.
You can have your starter rebuilt by most reputable shops, read back
through the old postings for more info.
