Coupe'd Across Europe

Post by turbotwo »

Back in 1988 I drove a 600 coupe from Germany to a ferry then from
southern England to Liverpool where we boarded another ferry to The
Isle of Man. The car I drove was purchased in England, apparently
they didn't sell sedans there. The coupe was right hand drive and
someone fitted some type of American brake booster to it. The booster
didn't work as it was in failure mode, so everytime I stepped on the
brakes the engine would die. Imagine driving on the wrong side of the
road and the engine dying at near every stop. I got really good at
combo right foot gas/brake at same time.
The car belonged to a German friend of mine and he wouldn't let me
disconnect the booster. To top it off the coupe came stock with 4
speeds non synchro trans and I believe drum front brakes. We exceeded
redline as I drove the Autobahn for 3 hours at 85mph from Fehmarn to
Hamburg. Once in South Hampton we made it to Liverpool in 11 hours of
straight through driving.
The trip back landed us in Holland where we drove back into Hamburg,
it was a harsh trip in a Honda 600 as I was driving the whole trip
alone, Martin was with his wife in an S800 convertible.

just want to commend on your story.
there are sedans sold in the uk and almost all the
coupe-z where sold whit the original brake booster as
for the sedan type, the where sold whithout one.
as far as i know both type's are never sold whit synchro transmission in europe.
now there are not so many left here in europe and
specialy the coupe z model that was not sold as much as the sedan type's.
the where only sold from 1970 til 1973
