Brakes

Post by timk11 »

Last Thursday I was driving on Airport Boulevard, Mobile's imitation of the Indianapolis 500, when a fellow in an SUV changed lanes pulling in front of me, then slammed on his brakes because the traffic light turned red.  I was forced to lock up all four wheels, pull to the right then back to the left to keep from hitting him.  I ended up in a sideways slide and stopped about six inches from his back bumper.  When the light changed he took off as though nothing had happened.  I followed him.  He got into the left turn lane and I followed him.  He pulled into a convenience store gas station.  I followed him.  He kept on going around the gas pumps. I followed him. Finally he stopped.  I stayed in my car right behind him.  I knew if I got out of my car he would be gone like a shot. We sat there for about a minute.  He finally rolled down his window and when he looked back and saw my collar (I am an Episcopal priest) he became very apologetic.  I gave him a lecture on driving which he sat in silence and listened to.  Finally with more apologies and promises to drive more carefully we parted company.  Luckily, about three months ago I had put mag wheels and 13" 50 profile tires on the car.  I think the extra rubber on the road probably allowed me to stop instead of running into him.  He scared the devil out of me, but I am sure he is driving around looking for a little orange car and if he sees one he will take evasive maneuvers to avoid any more confrontations.  I am glad I had good brakes and a light car.  There are advantages to driving Honda 600s.  They might bend if you hit or are hit by bigger vehicles, but they will stop quickly.  Check your brakes.  Make sure they are in good condition.

After I chewed on his fanny (I'm retired Navy) he won't have to go to church for at least a month.  He was afraid to get out of his car, and I'm 62.

WOW. I had a similar experience last year that did not
end as happily as yours. I was cruising along at about
35 on a very busy one lane (in my direction) when an
old lady turning to her left pulled up from a side
street (no light) rolled out to the center of the road
as if to wait for traffic (namely me) to go by. Right
at the point where I decided that she had stopped to
let me by (I had the right of way) she stomped on it
right in front of me! I had nowhere to go but lock 'em
up. My N600 tried to swap ends on me, the rear swung
out to my right. I hit her rear end on my passenger
side front corner and bounced off like a bumper car
(and I had just done a ton of bodywork on the hood!) I
had witnesses behind me that vouched for me, she was
totally in the wrong, blew off the right of way and
pulled into traffic. There was no excuse for it. It
was a bright sunny day and I was not speeding. Tim,
you are VERY lucky. Careful out there everyone!
