Correct, there are a lot of things DMV will not tell you unless you ask the
question. I too was given the list of tasks to perform before registration
was given. However, when I provided proof that Honda 600 was less than the
850cc Fiat used as a guide in the book, my cars never went any further than
the drive up window at DMV to check the VIN and title. The people at DMV
are not mechanics, nor are they there to subject to the ravings of old car
owners. They are however hired by the state of California and given orders
to apply one of these hidden rules of getting you the owner to admit to the
value of the vehicle. I feel lucky not to have registered over 200 cars in
the state of California. I have completed a "title only" transfer on all
the cars I plan on restoring or just get running. Getting a title only type
of transfer stops the registration process, not all the requirements have to
be met until you complete the vehicle or at least get it running. All the
documents necessary to register the car without driving it up to the window
(including Pictures of the car if you have them) will keep the car in a
state of computer "title only" limbo until you get it in to complete the
registration. I currently have 2 600's in this situation for over 5 years.
One I completed last year after it was in title only limbo for over three
years and the registration was a breeze. However, I am cautious about how
I treat the people behind the counter, they are people too and performing a
service which helps me to enjoy my hobby.
Rules change, the three dollar book idea is good, (I thought mine cost
more) there is a new bill up on the legislature now which if signed will
keep everyone from having the Blue and Yellow plates. This is a bill that
calls for all plates in California to be painted with reflective paint.
There may be exclusions to the rules but if you want to keep the Blue plates
on your Honda 600 I would talk to your representative soon.
That's to bad about your camera Miles, damn things are to expensive to
lose. Does it have to be a Fuji FinePix Digital Camera 1.3? Or are you
looking to Just replace it?
