Matt,
If you remove the fuel line where it enters the carb and spray the carb
cleaner into the fuel inlet line of the carb, that will direct cleaner into
the internal fuel filter screen and the needle and seat of the float section.
That is the area where I suspect your problem lies. If the carb is
disconnected from the car, you can invert it and spray in the cleaner. With the
carb inverted, the float will open up the needle and seat and allow debris to
be blown into the bowl of the carb and away from the needle and seat. If you
do not want to remove the carb from the car, try to get it sideways as much
as possible.
When you get the courage to open your carb, you will find it very
simple in construction. Only a few parts are available for you to replace. To
set the float level, you bend a metal tang on the float with your needle-nosed
pliers and measure with a scale/ruler. Most of the action in your carb is
accessed under the float bowl cover. It is held in place with screws.
Sometimes after removing the screws, the bowl remains attached because it is stuck
to the gasket (I think it is neoprene). Then you can use a small plastic (or
other non-marring material) mallet to tap around the bowl to free it up. Or
you may use a flat-bladed screwdriver to gently pry the bowl off. Or you
can use a hair dryer to warm it up and free the gasket from the cover. To get
at the needle and seat, you need to remove the float which is held in place
by a stainless steel pin. If it does not pull out easily with your pliers,
you can tap it out using a small pin punch. If you don't have a pin punch,
use a small nail (but having the right tools always makes the job easier and
causes less problems)
good luck,
Dale.
I purchased some carb cleaner yesterday and i will try removing the air
filter in a few hours when I have to go to the post office.

Amen, Matt. Not everyone is a Motorcycle / Auto engine hybrid
genious. I appreciate the stimulating ideas on the carb tunning that
this has started in that I am having a simular problem (albeit not as
severe.)
Sorry that some one has a short patience alotment.

to chastise me for "wasting my time" makes me less than enthusiastic to
ask for ideas in the future.
