Re: Speedometer

Post by cotton »

Dale, Bill, Tom,
  I got it loose and oiled, greased from under the hood.
  Now I can't get the cable and speedo gear together.  I can't see the gear.
 Bad eyes, going for surgery on one of them Friday.
Going in for pre-op
in a little bit so it will be late this afternoon b4 I can get back to it.
Maybe with the break things will go better on next go at it.
   Thanks for y'alls help.  Don't go away, I may need you again.

Sometimes Grease alone will not do the trick.  There is a product called cable lube that is full of a graphite, mix this into the grease and you will have a better lubricant.   The cable lube can be just the thing if your cable is only 10 or so years old, but we are talking about some cables that have many more years, lots of rust and much more wear.

Cotton;
Fitting the cable into the notch on the speedometer gear shaft is accomplished by lining the two up.  The cable does not have to be in the speedometer but it does have to be close.  So push it up into the meter end twist it until the cable end lines up with the gear shaft and then pull it out of the meter (about an inch) and fit the cable into the gear shaft.  Now just pull the cable housing over the cable and thread on the cap.  The cable end should go back into the meter without a hitch.
