engine
I have my z600 engine out and clean. It ran well (I am doing a engine bay clean and paint) while out are there things I may want to do? Thanks Jay
Re: engine
Jay;
If not already done, rebuild the rack and pinion replacing the pinion bushings. And, if the struts aren't leaking, pull them apart, drain the strut oil and replace it. Then remove everything you can and clean. I like a foaming product like scrubbing bubbles to loosen years of dirt and grease and these are normally safe for painted areas. Use a toothbrush like scrubbing tool and go for detail.

Replace your clutch and throwout bearing. You'll be glad you did it. ---Bryan O

Re: engine
Hi Jay,
I see lots of good suggestions for things to do while the engine is out. Here are some more;
1. Check your fan belt and fan housing assembly. Check the fan belt is not cracked. Check the fan housing assembly is secured properly by the four bolts and the rubber cushions are in good shape. It is much easier to change these when the engine is out.
2. Check the condition of the clutch, speedometer, and tach cables. For the speedometer, you can remove the center drive line and clean and lubricate it.
3. Check the condition of the CV boots on the axles. They should not have any tears, splits, or cracking. They should be banded tight to the axles. When you last drove the car, did you hear any noise when making left or right turns? If so, the CV joints need some attention.
4. You may want to check the brush assembly on the alternator while it is easy to access.
5. Check the cam chain tensioner near the bottom of the cylinder barrels (you will have to remove the cooling fan assembly). You could pull off the valve cover and tug on the cam chain at the rear side and see if it is snug but are able to move the chain with some effort. The shop manual details how to check the tensioner if it is removed from the engine. My method described above only lets you know the spring is still working. The book method checks the hydraulics and the spring.
6. You may want to check the front wheel bearings. With tires and wheels attached, you can check the free play. It should feel snug.
good luck,
Dale

Thank you.. Fan belt was good but replacing, cables are cleaned ,lubed and ends polished, CV Axels disasembled cleaned repacked and new boots,wheel bearing were good so cleaned and repacked I will check brushes (probably replace) where do I acuire brushes? I will make engine shine as I'm duing a full restoration. I am a bit nurvous about opening engine but want to check clutch and other parts I'll have to have a machanic friend stop over to inspect things for me as I'm not sure of the way things should be. Thanks Jay
