Wheels and tires

Hi Tom,
     I see that!    I was online with JC Whitney today and their rep, Joey, told me they did not sell a tire for the Honda 600 car but here
it is at the online catalog.  They need to give their help some more training.

I may be a self important ninny, but try getting through state inspection, or try explaining to the authorities you are too cheap to buy DOT issue tires for your vehicle.  Oh, I forgot, there are no law enforcement authorities on a rallycross.  Have fun.

many atvs and golf carts weigh more then the 600 and many atvs are more powerful, have a higher top speed and certainly exert a greater load on the wheels during off roading. anybody who says otherwise about the safety of the wheels/tires on the hwy etc. is just being a self important ninny.  I won many SCCA rallycross races with my 600 coupe and have driven it in ways most people couldn't imagine. Your link to Performance Plus tires is showing a retail store in Long Beach, CA. for the persons living in SoCal who want to avoid the costly shipping charges.  I put in different locations and was quoted the following shipping charges on 4 tires;
ship to Long Beach (where the retail store is located): $59
ship to Oregon:  $62
ship to Chicago: $68
ship to NYC: $71
Hmmm,  looks like they are doing all the shipping from regional warehouses spread around the US that all the tire places can access.

Yeah,  if you are not running on a public highway,  you can do whatever you want ...... at least until too many people start doing something dangerous to attract the attention of the government.
Years ago I saw the Green Mamba (jet-powered dragster....check out YouTube for some awesome clips of it in action) doing exhibition runs (no competitive runs are allowed for jet dragsters at NHRA-sanctioned events).  Afterwards I was looking at it in the pits and noticed it had some standard Goodyear passenger car tires on it.  I thought that was odd,  a car running speeds of 300 mph on tires designed for 125 mph.   When I asked the crew about how safe it was to be running the passenger car tires, they explained to me that 2 things were working in their favor;
1)  since it was a jet-powered car,  there was not any power being applied to the ground through the tires (traction was not an issue) which translates into less tire heat
2)  the 125 mpg rating was related to tire heating and since not very much heat was created in the tires over the 1/4 mile (much of the braking was done by the chutes)  they worked fine.
I suspect there is some speed at which the tires would disintegrate or distort enough to loose air,  but since they are in a profession where danger is part of the job,  they can just try out something and see if it works.

Heck, it's hard to find parts listed for a Honda 600 anywhere - including a Honda dealer.
But JC Whitney does have a listing for Kuhmo (sp) 10" tires!

It is the oddest thing.  If you ask JC Whitney if they have a tire for a 1972 Honda Z600 they will tell you NO.  But you can see it on their webcatalog.  I just talked to them about the part (JC Whitney sku # 1JA 549183   )  and they do show it as a valid part which is shipped directly from the manufacturer.  Probably ships from the same warehouse used by TireRack, PerformancePlus, and all the others.

This issue has come up over and over again.  Peoples responses are always the same. . They are concerned about the legality of the tyres.  Or the safety. Not whether or not they are a viable option for the intended use.  Nobody has ever been given a ticket by the police for non dot approved tires, nor would any police waste their time on such a matter. Period. If somone has gotten such a ticket in their 600 then scan it and post it. As far as vehicle inspections, a car as old as the 600 has long been exempt from such inspections throughout the northwest.  Concerning cheap tires, i run yoko a008's-  the best you can buy for the 600.  It all comes down to what you expect from the car and the tyres.  You could drive around town on wheel barrow tyres(or golf cart tyres if you value economy over performance) all day long, and if you knew what to expect from them, be fine.  If you can't figure that out you have no business driving anything.
