Re: parts

Post by Miles »

The reason there are no more parts in Honda inventory is because within the past 15 years or so, Honda scrapped the Honda 600 parts. The reason they scrapped the parts was because they were given a tax write off at current market value. Even if the parts were purchased in the 1970's they were allowed to scrap parts at current value. Imagine the write off. A crankshaft back in 1979 was only $200.00, about the time parts were dumped, cranks were about $800.00. I am not sure exactly how many dollars of parts got dumped.
These days Honda has a special warehouse to keep these vintage parts, it is known of course as *the vintage warehouse* ! It's in Georgia. I worked for a factory trained Honda mechanic in 1979-81 who told me that there was a fenced yard at H onda Gardena where they kept all the engines that got returned for warranty. No one was allowed to take anything from there and the engines were destroyed on a regular basis.
Lazorlite parts company did the same thing. Lazorlite used to take original Honda parts and repackage them under their own label. I used to buy gaskets sets for under $20.00 eack kit. They had most of the set, but only ever one exhaust oring gasket. When Lazorlite got bought out the new company got rid of all the parts. Besides gaskets, they also sold engine valves, cam chains, and more. I remember Bill telling me all the parts were taken south of the border and placed in storage, what happened then? Don't know.

I think Honda retail is $13.80 each.

Miles;
I talked to the CEO of Lazorlite the night they were bought out by BeckArnley, I was calling about the drive chain cover gasket being for a Honda 360 and not the 600.  He kind of laughed and said that won't be a problem anymore.  Plans were that BeckArnley would be crushing all parts or repackaging (no clear understanding what).   But there were some parts houses that missed the initial cut off to return parts and were offering them at much higher prices.  And, some stories of parts still being held south of the border but these too were picked up by BeckArnley.
    If there are any still around they are most likely sitting in a box unmarked or out of the computer system.

Sorry for not giving up a # with a statement . The Honda motorcycle # For an "Alternative" oil filter is #154A1-413-005 it comes with o-rings they are not exact nether is the filter. If you can get the proper filter kit from Miles by all means do so! This filter has the indentation on each end and is slightly bigger in the center. If you use this filter as with the OEM filter make sure
the filter washer is on the spring. Between the spring and filter on the bottom. I have seen em on the top ,or gone. If not get # 15414-300-000 or equal,Kaw, Yam, Hon. all the same. I take the grommet off the old filter and Put it on the top of the filter, and trace the washer on to a piece of gasket material to seal the gap between the filter bottom and washer. I also change the spring out that # is 15414-300-000
Total price at Honda motorcycle shop for all of this $16.43 It is not the right filter, spring, washer, o-rings but they will work,are in stock and can get ya by!
