Unless you have rust Holes in your tank you can easily salvage a rusty tank overnight.
I use about 5% muriatic acid and fill with water. Be careful of the fumes! Alternately you
can use phosphoric acid like in Metal Prep, maybe like 10% but don't forget about it as it will gum up stuff.
I was cleaning a bunch of skeleton keys and forgot them in the phosphoric for a week. All black now
and stinky. Remove fuel sender in both instances.
In my Powell gas tank it wasn't rusty but was full of shellac'ed up gasoline. Fill the tank with
oil eater or purple cleaner and let sith for a week. drain & pressure wash. It came out really nice.
Still working good.
