Steering Wheel Locked

Post by celticcase »

Hey All. I just bought a couple Honda n600s for a restoration project but they didn't come with keys. The steering wheel is locked and I can't turn the car because of it. Does anyone know how to unlock the steering wheel so that I can easily maneuver the car. At least until I get a key made? I don't want to damage the locking mechanism; I just want to temporarily unlock the steering wheel lock. They are really hard to move around right now. Luckily I had some friends help me "man handle" them but it would be nice if I could just steer them where they need to go.
Thanks all,
CJ Kelly.

Hi CJ;
The lock assembly is held together by two bolts that had heads on them that were made to snap off when tightened.  To take them off you will need to drill into them and use an easy-out tool to take the bolts out.  The locking assembly will come off and all you need to do is take it to a lock smith to have keys made.  Remember to write down the ignition wires connections as they don't match colors.

It is easy! You will need a Dremel tool with a small cut off wheel attachment, and just slice a nice wide deep cut across the back of the bolt. Then just use a flat blade screwdriver and unscrew the two bolts that hold the ignition switch on to the steering column. Please wear eye protection when you do this as those little cut off wheels blow up a lot!
