MSD box Honda N600

Post by Mark P Hatten »

Fire in the hole ! Initial testing knocked 2 seconds off my 0-60 mph time. The stock N600 ignition would barely jump 15k voltage with my Thexton spark gap testing tool. New points gapped .016" to 90' dwell and new condenser and new NGK plugs gapped .024" did not help much if at all. So, I went crazy and installed a MSD box and double tower Haltech coil.. WOW! Now we have easy 40-60K spark volts, had to regap plugs to .045", leaned the carb out due to burning all the fuel. No more redline limit. Way smoother, easier starting, no more exhaust smell. It's all good  Wow wow wow.!

Yes, your theory is correct, and it is so simple it's like MAGIC

Hi Mark,
Interesting. Thanks for the report.
I'm not (yet) planning this upgrade, but one thing has been making me curious. There's only one
contact breaker on the N/Z600 points, with one wire coming from the points to the coil. There
are two lobes on the ignition cam. There is no distributor. Am I right that this thing fires both
plugs every time one cylinder is on the compression stroke? Or is there some black magic I'm
missing? Black magic doesn't seem to be involved anywhere in this engine.
I'm looking at http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ign ... ition.aspx.
I guess expecting a distributor but just having the coil lead attached to both coils, it just
naively continues to fire both cylinders.

Hi Mark;
When I find low voltage coming from the coil I check the resistance and often find that there are other problems such as a good ground and dirty connections.  I have even had high resistance coming from the spark plug and it was new.  One of the most often causes of low or intermittent spark at the points is the warn breaker plate center shaft.
Shimming it up with stainless steel shim stock solves the problem.
But the Multiple Spark Discharge (MSD) system is an idea I had not thought of.

Bill,
I've been driving it a few days now with the MSD, not a single sputter, not any more perceptible power per-se, but much smoother power through the whole band, less exhaust smell when idling, much quicker instant starts, and best of all no more annoying intermittent high RPM miss!.
