coupe back hatch repair

Post by tdthies1 »

Has anyone had any luck on repairing the crack on the back hatch on the coupes. Mine is now broke all the way through.

Hatch Crack Repair.
Yes, and it takes a lot of fiberglass and support under or in-between the top and bottom shells to the hatch.  Cutting a V in the crack is not enough.  It will crack again.  Placing a strip of sheet metal on the under side of the top section of the hatch, cut a length of the plastic away put the metal strip in and then fiberglass it in place using part of the plastic section just removed to fill it in.  Then lots of body work and painting to make it look great again.  How thick should the metal strip be?  thick enough to keep the hatch from breaking again.  I used an eighth of an inch thick by almost two inches wide and over a foot long.   And 6 years later I just noticed a hair line crack in mine, time to do it again.  The plastic is old and the sun is unforgiving.

it looks like this is going to be a winter time project to me.  I took off the springs so there wont be so much stress.  I saw a big difference in lack of movement when the springs are off.  Carry a stick with me now.  lol.  I have a spare hatch but all four corners are cracked on it and not on the top.  first one I have seen like that.  it still has the original (faded trim) in it.
Thanks bill for the help

Hi Tom;
I have found that the hatch that Honda was replacing the originals with seemed to hold up longer.  But they all crack.  If you take off the metal bracket the date of manufacture for your hatch is hand written under it.   It was the early version of "Recall "

I have not taken the hatch off of the car but the one that has the cracks in all 4 corners has no date on it..  If I was to have it plastic welded,  what kind of plastic is the hatch made of?
